Chapter 18 - RestitutionThirty-seven families qualified for direct restitution from the district settlement pool.

Replacement device value.

Insurance deductibles.

Data-recovery costs where documented.

Privacy counseling in a few cases.

No one became rich.

Rebecca and Thomas could have sought more.

Cameron’s phone had been recovered intact.

His direct financial loss small.

The family’s civil claim focused on assault, privacy invasion, unlawful access and emotional distress.

Settlement:

education fund for Cameron;

therapy expenses;

legal fees;

policy reforms;

no nondisclosure clause concerning student safety.

Rebecca rejected the first offer because it required confidentiality.

Cameron asked:

“Would we get more money if we shut up?”

She hated the question.

“Yes.”

“Don’t.”

“Okay.”

His guardian ad litem later approved the revised agreement as fair.

Part of settlement money went into a protected account available for education after eighteen.

Thomas asked Cameron what he wanted to buy now.

Cameron looked offended.

“It’s not shopping money.”

Thomas smiled.

May you like

“Good.”

Family growth.
