Chapter 13 - The Cabinet LedgerA handwritten ledger from Mrs. Donovan’s house became evidence piece six.

Columns:

student initials;

device model;

date confiscated;

parent contact;

status;

ClearPath value.

Another column:

H

B

CP

Key at bottom:

H — Hold.

B — Brayden.

CP — ClearPath.

Cameron:

H/B

Jasmine:

H/CP

Tyler:

H

Keira:

B/CP

There.

Not every phone went to Brayden.

But his use was organized enough to have a notation.

Mrs. Donovan’s attorney claimed B meant “backup.”

Brayden laughed when told.

“No.”

“What did it mean?”

“Me.”

The ledger also contained a number beside each:

days held before transfer.

Many:

Some legitimate abandonment windows.

Cameron:

No chance of abandonment.

He had been selected immediately.

Why?

High-value newer model.

And because Mrs. Donovan was angry with him.

Punishment and personal benefit converged.

Then one entry lacked student initials.

P15 Pro — B — birthday

Investigators identified device.

Belonged to Keira Lawson.

Her parents had filed missing-property complaint the previous spring.

Brayden received it near his birthday.

His father Kevin stared at him.

“Was that the blue phone?”

Brayden nodded.

Kevin left the room.

Later he told investigators:

“I asked where it came from.”

“What did Janice say?”

“Refurbished.”

“Did you ask more?”

“No.”

Again.

Did not ask.

Kevin’s self-accountability.

He had been so determined not to fight with his ex-wife that he stopped questioning obvious inconsistencies.

He mistook avoiding conflict for protecting Brayden.

Brayden learned:

if Mom says something confidently, everyone stops asking.

Until Cameron didn’t.

Then another page.

Mrs. Donovan tracked parent behavior too.

works late

Families who “worked late” had disproportionately long hold times.

Because parents could not reach office before closing.

Mrs. Donovan interpreted logistical difficulty as neglect.

Then used it to justify transfer.

Class and work schedules became vulnerability.

Not a racial scheme.

Not every story needed the same axis.

This one was about authority exploiting families least able to fight quickly.

Single parents.

Shift workers.

Parents without flexible schedules.

Rebecca saw her name:

busy / pushes later

She stared.

Mrs. Donovan had studied which families were easiest to outlast.

That was the darker pattern.

The device program was not random.

It rewarded her when parents gave up.
