Chapter 16 - The Board HearingThe public administrative hearing lasted seven hours.

Cameron attended forty minutes.
Then left.
His choice.
Mrs. Donovan’s employment record showed nineteen years of teaching.
Strong evaluations.
Hundreds of students liked her.
Several parents defended her.
“She held kids accountable.”
“She cared.”
“She helped my daughter.”
All could be true.
Harm did not require total villainy.
Then Felicia Grant spoke.
“My daughter’s phone was transferred while the school told me it was lost.”
Tessa Lawson.
“My work schedule was written down as evidence I would probably give up.”
Tyler Monroe.
“My phone came back empty.”
Eli.
“I handed Cameron my phone because an adult had just hit him.”
Short.
Then Marcus Bell.
“I approved transfers without verifying ownership.”
“Were you forced?”
“No.”
“Pressured?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
“Workload. Grant deadlines. Mrs. Donovan.”
“Does pressure remove responsibility?”
“No.”
Dr. Hayes.
“I accepted results I wanted to believe.”
That sentence mattered.
Then Brayden.
He testified privately rather than in open hearing because he was a minor.
Summary:
he had used at least twelve confiscated devices;
kept three for extended periods;
reset seven;
read private content;
helped photograph or log device information;
knew some owners had not voluntarily surrendered them.
He also described emotional pressure from his mother.
The board did not excuse him.
He received school discipline through an independent administrator:
temporary suspension;
digital-ethics counseling;
restitution participation;
loss of certain extracurricular privileges.
Not expulsion.
He was thirteen.
The adult architect bore greater responsibility.
Then Mrs. Donovan’s attorney argued one moment should not erase nineteen years.
A parent in back whispered:
“It wasn’t one.”
No dramatic interruption.
But the phrase spread.
The slap was one moment visible enough to force everyone to examine the rest.
At hearing end:
Mrs. Donovan terminated.
Teaching license referred for ethics review.
Marcus Bell removed from discipline supervision and placed on unpaid suspension pending final personnel action.
Dr. Hayes announced resignation effective after transition.
Grant oversight transferred outside school.
Device-recovery program suspended.
The power reversal was complete.
Cameron’s phone was in his own pocket when he heard.
He touched it.
Not to check whether it was still there.
Habit.
Then removed his hand.
It was his.
May you like
That should have been ordinary.
Now it felt new.
