Mason asked to speak at a board meeting.
Evelyn begged him not to.
He did anyway.
“My mother changed some of my grades.”
Cameras clicked.
“I did not ask her to.”
He swallowed.
“But I benefited.”
Then:
“I used to think being first would prove I was good enough.”
Emily watched.
“My mom wanted it more than I did.”
He looked toward Walter.
“I don’t know exactly which accomplishments are mine yet.”
His voice cracked.
“But I want to find out.”
Students stopped calling him cheater after that.
Not immediately.
