Chapter 7 - The Man Behind MarwickMarwick Capital was not a bank.

That was the first problem.
The second was the man who owned it.
Victor Lang.
Daniel remembered the name from childhood.
Victor had once worked with Henry Mercer on commercial real-estate acquisitions.
Then, almost overnight, Henry had cut him out.
Daniel had never known why.
Emma searched public court filings from the townhouse while Nora played on the floor beside Milo.
“Victor sued your father twelve years ago.”
“For what?”
“Breach of partnership agreement.”
“What happened?”
“Settled confidentially.”
Emma clicked another record.
“Two years later Marwick Capital was formed.”
Daniel sat across from her.
“So my mother borrowed from someone my father hated.”
“Eighteen million dollars.”
“She already inherited almost forty million in liquid assets.”
“Then where did it go?”
That question led them back to the storage files.
Evelyn had invested heavily in luxury developments under shell companies.
Three had failed.
A resort project in Arizona.
A private club in Charleston.
A waterfront development in Florida.
Losses exceeded twenty-five million dollars.
Emma stared.
“She hid all of this.”
“From Dad.”
“And from you.”
Daniel nodded.
“What happens if Marwick seizes her shares?”
“She loses most of her remaining leverage.”
“But if she gets Nora's shares?”
“She controls the company.”
Emma shut the laptop.
“We need to stop talking about this like it's just corporate leverage.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She tried to kill Nora.”
The sentence hurt more spoken aloud.
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
His eyes snapped toward her.
Emma softened slightly.
“I don't mean that cruelly.”
“Then what do you mean?”
“I mean she's your mother. Part of you is still looking for another explanation.”
Daniel said nothing.
Emma was right.
Some small part of him still hoped the pool had been a monstrous misunderstanding.
That Evelyn had moved the ladder and forgotten.
That she thought another exit existed.
That she believed someone else was watching Nora.
Anything except the truth.
Nora walked over carrying two plastic blocks.
“Daddy.”
Daniel immediately looked down.
“Yes?”
She placed one block in his hand.
“One for you.”
She gave the other to Emma.
“One for Mommy.”
Then she returned to Milo.
Daniel stared at the toy.
Emma said quietly, “She trusts you.”
“I know.”
“Then trust her.”
That evening Daniel received a call from Victor Lang himself.
“Daniel Mercer.”
Victor's voice was calm and polished.
“You've been asking questions about my firm.”
“How did you know?”
“Rich people asking about other rich people creates noise.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“My mother borrowed money from you.”
“That isn't confidential information I'm free to discuss.”
“She pledged Mercer shares.”
“Also confidential.”
“If my daughter dies, Evelyn obtains enough shares to control the company.”
This time Victor paused.
When he answered, the confidence had changed.
“I don't know anything about your daughter.”
“You know the trust.”
“No.”
“You gave my mother a majority-control incentive.”
“I gave Evelyn financing contingent on her assets.”
“You knew where the shares could come from.”
“No.”
Daniel listened carefully.
Victor sounded genuinely disturbed.
Perhaps he was acting.
Perhaps not.
“Did Charles Wren contact you?” Daniel asked.
Silence.
“Victor?”
“Yesterday.”
Daniel stood.
“What did he say?”
“He asked whether Evelyn had shown me an estate amendment.”
“And?”
“I said yes.”
“What amendment?”
“The contingent transfer.”
Daniel's chest tightened.
“Did he say anything else?”
“He asked for a copy.”
“Did you send it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Charles drafted it.”
“No,” Daniel said. “He witnessed it.”
Victor paused.
Then said:
“Daniel, the copy Evelyn gave us contains Charles's name under ‘Drafting Counsel.’”
Daniel felt the room narrow.
The version in Henry's binder did not.
Two versions existed.
“Send it to me.”
“I need my attorneys—”
“Victor, my three-year-old daughter almost died yesterday.”
Another pause.
Then:
“Check your email.”
A file arrived.
Daniel opened it.
Same amendment.
Same transfer to Evelyn.
But a metadata page was attached.
The document had been created on Charles Wren's office computer.
Not six months before Henry's death.
Three weeks after Henry died.
Emma read over Daniel's shoulder.
Her face went pale.
The amendment was not merely forged.
It had been created after the man who supposedly signed it was already dead.
At the bottom of Victor's email was one additional sentence.
Ask Evelyn why she needed the document before Nora's third birthday.
Daniel looked at the date.
Nora had turned three eleven days earlier.

And according to another clause in Henry's trust, something changed when she reached that age.
Daniel had not yet discovered what.
