Chapter 17 - Emma's Secret“What did she mean?”

Daniel asked the question quietly.

Emma sat across from him in the empty study.

“I don't know.”

“Don't do that.”

“Do what?”

“Give me the answer people give when they need time to invent another one.”

Emma looked away.

Daniel's stomach sank.

“You know something.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Not about the pool.”

“Emma.”

“I swear.”

“Then what?”

She took a breath.

“Your mother contacted me two weeks ago.”

Daniel froze.

“Why?”

“She wanted me to help remove you as trustee of Nora's shares.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“She said you were financially reckless. That you were liquidating family assets. That Nora's future was at risk.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I thought it was another one of Evelyn's games.”

“What did she want you to do?”

“File a petition with family court.”

“For what?”

“To challenge your management of Nora's trust.”

Daniel stood.

“On what grounds?”

“She had documents.”

“What documents?”

“Financial statements showing you lost fourteen million dollars.”

“I didn't.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it then.”

“I suspected they were misleading.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Emma's voice rose.

“Because you and I spent years turning every conversation into a fight!”

Daniel stopped.

Emma continued.

“She knew exactly how to approach me. She told me you were becoming like Henry. Controlling. Secretive. Obsessed with the company.”

Daniel looked away.

Some of that had been true during their marriage.

Emma softened.

“She used real wounds to sell me a lie.”

Daniel sat.

“What did you do?”

“I met with an attorney.”

His face tightened.

“I did not file anything.”

“Did you give Evelyn information?”

Emma hesitated.

“What information?”

“She asked when Nora would be with you.”

Daniel felt cold.

“And you told her?”

“I told her Nora was spending Friday at the mansion because you had the board dinner.”

Friday.

The pool day.

Daniel stood abruptly.

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know.”

“She knew Nora would be there because of you.”

“I didn't know what she planned.”

“You gave her the schedule.”

“I know.”

Daniel turned away.

His anger needed somewhere to go.

But there was nowhere safe to put it.

Emma whispered, “This is why I didn't tell you earlier.”

“Because you knew I'd blame you.”

“Yes.”

“I do blame you.”

She flinched.

“But not for what my mother did.”

Emma looked up.

Daniel struggled to continue.

“I blame you for hiding it.”

“I was ashamed.”

“So was Charles.”

She nodded.

That silenced them both.

Shame had protected Evelyn repeatedly.

Charles hid forgery because he was ashamed of gambling.

Thomas hid financial crimes because he was ashamed of debt.

Emma hid the meeting because she was ashamed of being manipulated.

Daniel had hidden his failing marriage because he was ashamed of not being Henry's perfect son.

Evelyn understood shame.

She weaponized it.

Emma wiped her eyes.

“There is something else.”

Daniel almost laughed from exhaustion.

“Of course there is.”

“She gave me copies of the financial documents.”

“Do you still have them?”

“Yes.”

They retrieved the packet from Emma's home.

The records were fake.

But not entirely.

They contained genuine Mercer Development statements altered to make Daniel appear reckless.

Metadata showed they had been created by someone using Thomas's corporate login.

Another link.

Then Daniel noticed a handwritten note Evelyn had given Emma.

If Daniel loses trustee authority before the annual restructuring, the shares remain protected.

Daniel stared.

“She wanted you to remove me before I could change the beneficiary.”

Emma nodded.

“That was Plan A.”

Daniel understood.

Evelyn had first tried legal manipulation.

Use Emma.

Remove Daniel as trustee.

Prevent restructuring.

Preserve Evelyn's contingent claim.

When Emma refused to file quickly enough, Evelyn escalated.

Plan B.

The pool.

The revelation was horrifying—but it also strengthened the case.

Premeditation.

Evelyn had been building ways to obtain Nora's shares for weeks.

Daniel called Bennett.

The detective listened carefully.

“This helps,” she said.

“Can you find Evelyn?”

“We're working on it.”

“Her passport is gone.”

“She didn't leave through an airport under her name.”

“Then where is she?”

Bennett hesitated.

“We found one possible lead.”

“What?”

“A private aircraft left a regional airport forty minutes after our warrant request.”

“Destination?”

“It filed for Toronto.”

Daniel felt sick.

“Was she onboard?”

“We don't know.”

The aircraft belonged to Black Alder Partners.

Thomas's company.

Evelyn and Thomas might be together.

But two hours later Canadian authorities reported the aircraft had landed.

Neither Evelyn nor Thomas was aboard.

Only the pilot.

The flight had been a decoy.

Back at the mansion, Milo began barking at the old wine cellar door.

Daniel looked down.

The dog scratched frantically.

Behind the door, investigators found something no one expected.

A concealed stairway descending beneath the mansion.

And at the bottom, a room Henry had built decades earlier.

May you like

The room was empty.

Except for Evelyn's missing passport.
