Chapter 11 - The Missing HoursWhere had Evelyn been between 3:30 P.M. and sunset?

Daniel reconstructed the day.
At 3:17 she unplugged the camera.
At approximately 3:22 Nora entered the pool.
By Nora's memory, Evelyn removed the ladder immediately afterward.
At 3:41 Evelyn's car left the mansion.
Gate records showed it.
Then nothing until 8:52 P.M., when Evelyn returned with Daniel.
Daniel had been at a board dinner.
Evelyn had called him at 8:20, claiming she needed help reviewing papers at the mansion.
He had met her there.
She had maneuvered him back to the exact location where Nora was trapped.
Why?
To discover Nora's body with him?
To create a witness?
To control the story?
Emma hated that question.
“She expected Nora to be dead.”
Daniel could barely say the words.
“Yes.”
“And she brought you there to find her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel had an answer now.
“Because if she discovered Nora alone, it would look suspicious.”
Emma stared.
“But if you arrived together—”
“She could say we found her at the same time.”
“And blame what?”
“An accident.”
Emma shook her head.
“No ladder isn't an accident.”
“She could claim it had been removed for maintenance.”
“And the camera?”
“Power failure.”
“But she unplugged it.”
“Which she thought nobody could prove.”
Emma went quiet.
Daniel continued.
“She probably planned to say Nora slipped outside after Evelyn left. Maybe climbed into the pool herself.”
“A three-year-old.”
“People believe terrible things when the alternative is worse.”
Emma looked upstairs.
“And Milo?”
“She didn't plan for Milo.”
That was the variable.
Milo had kept Nora alive.
Daniel drove back to the mansion with security.
He followed the dog's probable path from the house to the pool.
The patio door had an electronic latch.
System logs showed it opened at 5:06 P.M.
User code:
House Staff Master.
But no employee admitted opening it.
Then Marcus found something.
The latch had malfunctioned twice that month.
If Milo jumped hard enough against it, the door might release.
Daniel remembered scratches on the glass.
Milo had heard Nora.
He had fought his way outside.
At the edge of the pool they found claw marks.
The dog had hesitated.
Then jumped in.
Daniel crouched beside them.
Milo had not only supported Nora.
He had chosen to enter the water.
A dog had made a moral decision his own mother had not.
Marcus called from beneath the patio eave.
“Daniel.”
He was holding a tiny plastic housing.
“What?”
“The camera has an internal diagnostic buffer.”
“I thought it lost power.”
“It did.”
“But?”
“This model stores the final thirty seconds before sudden power loss in internal flash memory.”
Daniel stared.
“Can you recover it?”
“Maybe.”
They removed the camera.
Two hours later Marcus connected it to a forensic workstation.
The recovered clip was corrupted.
Pixelated.
No audio.
But visible.
Evelyn walking beneath the camera.
Looking up.
Following the cable.
Reaching.
Then something else.
Before the plug disconnected, Evelyn looked toward the patio doors.
A second person stood inside.
Watching.
The image was blurry.
Male.
Dark jacket.
Marcus enhanced the frame.
Daniel leaned closer.
The face slowly sharpened.
Not enough for certainty.
But enough.
Thomas.
Daniel's cousin had been at the mansion.
He had lied.
The next frame showed Evelyn lifting one hand toward him.
Not waving.
Gesturing.
Then the video died.
Daniel called Thomas.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then Emma called.
Her voice was urgent.
“Daniel, someone just tried to pick Nora up from daycare.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
“What?”
“A man claimed you sent him.”
“Who?”
“They didn't release her.”
“Who was he?”
Emma sent the security screenshot.
Daniel opened it.
The man wasn't Thomas.
It wasn't Victor.
It was someone Daniel had never seen.

But on the man's jacket was a tiny embroidered logo.
Marwick Capital.
