Chapter 16 - Everyone Had a PriceVictor called Daniel before the police reached him.

“Charles is safe.”

“You put him in your car.”

“He asked me to.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas is trying to kill him.”

Daniel said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Charles contacted me after your motel photograph.”

“Why you?”

“He knows I have security.”

“You mean mercenaries.”

“Corporate security.”

“Where is he?”

“With my attorneys.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Everyone suddenly has attorneys.”

“That's what happens when families with money start telling the truth.”

Bennett arranged a formal surrender.

Charles appeared the next morning accompanied by counsel.

He gave investigators a full statement.

He admitted forging estate paperwork.

Accepting Evelyn's money.

Hiding documents.

Lying to Daniel.

But he denied participating in the pool plot.

His testimony matched the digital trail.

Evelyn had become increasingly desperate as Nora's third birthday approached.

Thomas had pushed for “a permanent solution.”

Charles claimed he never heard them explicitly discuss killing Nora.

He had heard one conversation three weeks earlier.

Thomas said:

“Once the child is out of the equation, the shares solve everything.”

Evelyn replied:

“Don't say things like that.”

Charles had convinced himself they meant legal restructuring.

Then Nora was trapped in the pool.

He knew what those words had meant.

Police obtained warrants for Thomas and Evelyn's financial records.

Evelyn had not yet been arrested.

Investigators wanted stronger physical evidence tying her to the ladder.

Daniel hated waiting.

Evelyn used the time.

She called family members.

Board directors.

Friends.

She told them Daniel was exploiting Nora's accident to steal her assets.

She described Emma as vindictive.

Charles as unstable.

Victor as a predator.

And herself as a grieving grandmother.

Some believed her.

That hurt Daniel more than he expected.

His aunt Margaret called.

“Your mother says Nora wandered outside alone.”

“Nora says Grandma told her to swim.”

“She is three.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

There it was again.

“She is three,” he repeated.

“Yes.”

“That doesn't make her invisible.”

Margaret sighed.

“Daniel, Evelyn raised you.”

“And that makes her incapable of hurting someone?”

“I didn't say that.”

“You implied it.”

The family was splitting.

Some supported Daniel.

Some supported Evelyn.

Some cared only about share prices.

At an emergency board meeting, Thomas's absence became impossible to ignore.

Daniel presented the audit.

Six million in improper vendor payments.

Eighteen million in Evelyn's private debt.

Black Alder.

Riverfront.

One director asked:

“Are you accusing your own mother of attempted murder?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“I am telling you law enforcement is investigating an incident in which my daughter was intentionally left without an exit from a pool.”

Another director whispered:

“My God.”

Daniel continued.

“Whatever you think of the family issues, corporate funds were diverted. That is documented.”

The board voted unanimously to suspend all transactions involving Riverfront.

Evelyn's plan, financially, was dead.

Then Daniel received a message during the meeting.

Forensic results.

The glove fragment on the ladder contained a usable DNA profile.

It matched Evelyn.

Daniel stared at the report.

At last.

Physical evidence.

Bennett called moments later.

“We're obtaining an arrest warrant.”

Daniel left the meeting.

Emma met him outside.

“Is it enough?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

Daniel expected relief.

Instead he felt grief.

His mother was going to be arrested for trying to kill his daughter.

No victory existed inside that sentence.

When police arrived at the mansion, Evelyn was gone.

Her car remained.

Her phone remained.

Her passport was missing.

And on Henry's desk sat one envelope.

Daniel's name written across it.

Inside was a single line:

Ask Emma what she knew before Nora went into the pool.

Daniel read it twice.

May you like

Then looked at Emma.

For the first time since the nightmare began, she looked frightened of him.
