Chapter 4 - Gold Digger or CinderellaBy noon, reporters stood outside the Whitmore gates.

Someone had leaked a photograph from the ballroom.
Noah holding Elena’s hand.
Alexander staring.
Victoria in the background.
Within hours, Elena’s life became public property.
Her childhood neighborhood.
Her community-college graduation photograph.
Her mother’s medical debt.
Her father’s bankruptcy.
Her salary.
Her sister’s small business.
The headline spreading fastest read:
GOLD DIGGER OR CINDERELLA?
Elena stared at her phone.
“They found my mother.”
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“Security will handle it.”
“That doesn’t make the article disappear.”
His public-relations director called every ten minutes.
Do not speak.
Do not react.
Do not create another headline.
Alexander ignored most of it.
Victoria returned that afternoon.
She entered the house furious.
“This is precisely what I warned you about.”
Elena turned.
“What you warned him about?”
Victoria stopped.
Elena held up her phone.
“This article knows I was fired before Noah chose me.”
Alexander looked between them.
Only a small group knew that.
Catherine.
Olivia.
Vanessa.
Victoria.
Staff.
Elena continued.
“It even knows you offered me money.”
Victoria’s face shifted.
Alexander saw it.
“Mother?”
“I was trying to control the narrative.”
“You leaked this?”
“I gave context.”
“You handed a woman’s private financial history to reporters.”
“I did not provide that information.”
“But you started it.”
Victoria sighed.
“You don’t understand public perception.”
Elena laughed once.
“I understand it perfectly.”
She removed her staff badge.
Placed it on the table.
“I resign.”
Noah stood in the doorway.
Nobody had seen him arrive.
“No.”
Elena turned.
His eyes filled immediately.
“Noah.”
“No.”
He ran forward and grabbed her sleeve.
“You stay.”
Elena crouched.
“This is not because of you.”
“You leave because I chose you.”
“No.”
“Grandma said everything got bad because I embarrassed people.”
Alexander’s face changed.
Victoria looked away.
Elena held Noah’s shoulders.
“Listen to me. You did nothing wrong.”
“You’re leaving.”
“Yes.”
“Then I did.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Noah, adults made bad decisions. Adults are responsible for them.”
Alexander listened.
The sentence was for him too.
Elena left that afternoon.
No apartment from Alexander.
No payoff.
No secret money.
She returned to the modest house she shared with her sister.
The press followed for three days.
Then another scandal took over the news cycle.
Noah did not recover as quickly.
He stopped eating breakfast.
Stopped drawing horses.
The nightmares returned.
Alexander began canceling evening meetings.
He sat beside Noah during homework.
Drove him to school himself.
Turned his phone off at dinner.
Noah did not immediately reward him.
Alexander decided that was fair.
One night Noah asked:
“Is Elena gone because of me?”
“No.”
“Because Grandma?”
“Partly.”
“Because you?”
Alexander paused.
He could have protected himself.
Instead:
“Partly.”
Noah studied him.
Alexander continued.
“I didn’t stop people from treating Elena badly soon enough.”
“Why?”
“Because I wasn’t paying attention.”
Noah looked down.
“Like me?”
The question broke something inside Alexander.
“Yes.”
The next morning, Alexander drove to Elena’s neighborhood.
No chauffeur.
No security convoy.
No flowers.
She opened the door.
“What are you doing here?”
“Apologizing.”
“For?”
“Assuming you wanted something from me.”
She crossed her arms.
“Continue.”
“For allowing my mother to treat you like someone whose intentions mattered less because you worked for us.”
“Continue.”
He almost smiled.
Then stopped.
“And for not knowing my own son well enough to understand why he trusted you.”
Elena’s anger softened.
Not disappeared.
Good.
Alexander did not deserve easy forgiveness.
“I’m not asking you to come back.”
“Good.”
“I need to ask you something.”
She waited.
“Do you know anything about a blue envelope?”
Her expression changed.
“What blue envelope?”
Alexander told her.
Elena became still.
Then she said something he did not expect.
“You need to ask Noah why he was inside Amelia’s room the night Vanessa was there.”
Alexander frowned.
“He followed Vanessa.”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he told me he was looking for something first.”
“What?”
May you like
Elena looked at him.
“His mother’s voice.”
