Chapter 13 - The Line They Would Not CrossNothing happened immediately.

That mattered.

Elena continued working.

Alexander remained her employer indirectly, even with independent oversight.

Both understood the problem.

One night after Noah fell asleep, they sat in the kitchen drinking coffee.

Alexander said:

“The board thinks we’re having an affair.”

Elena nearly choked.

“We’re not.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He looked at her.

She immediately regretted the question.

Silence.

Alexander answered carefully.

“I know we are not having an affair.”

“That wasn’t what I asked.”

“No.”

He looked down.

Elena did too.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Finally she said:

“This cannot happen while I work here.”

Alexander’s heart accelerated.

“So you think something could happen?”

“That is also not what I said.”

He smiled.

She glared.

“This is serious.”

“I know.”

“Noah loves me.”

“I know.”

“Your mother barely tolerates me.”

“She is improving.”

“She apologized by saying, ‘I may have misjudged certain aspects of your character.’”

Alexander laughed.

“That is practically poetry from her.”

Elena tried not to smile.

Then she became serious again.

“If we make this about Noah, it will destroy everything.”

Alexander understood.

Noah had chosen Elena as safety.

Not as a wife for his father.

The adults had to own whatever happened next.

Months passed.

Alexander and Elena became closer anyway.

Quietly.

Conversations after work.

Arguments about school.

Occasional dinners with Noah.

Nothing hidden.

Nothing named.

Then Alexander failed.

An acquisition emergency exploded on a Friday afternoon.

He canceled a weekend trip with Noah.

Again.

Elena found him in his office.

“You promised him.”

“This deal affects six thousand employees.”

“And your son has heard that sentence in different forms his whole life.”

Alexander’s temper flared.

“You’re not his mother.”

Silence.

The instant the words left him, he wanted them back.

Elena stepped away.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“I’m not.”

She left.

Alexander remained behind his desk.

For ten minutes.

Then he called his deputy.

“You’re handling the acquisition weekend.”

“Alexander?”

“You heard me.”

He went upstairs.

Noah was packing away a small bag.

“Trip canceled?”

Alexander sat beside him.

“No.”

Noah looked up.

“We’re going.”

“What about work?”

“Work has other adults.”

The next day they went.

Alexander did not call Elena.

When he returned, he went to her office.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

“I know you aren’t Amelia.”

“That is not enough.”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I used her absence against you because you told me something I didn’t want to hear.”

“Yes.”

“That was cruel.”

“Yes.”

“You could occasionally make this easier.”

“No.”

He laughed despite himself.

Elena finally smiled.

Then:

“You cannot use Amelia’s memory as a weapon whenever somebody challenges you.”

“I know.”

“And you cannot make me responsible for preventing you from becoming absent again.”

“I know.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Anything else?”

“Probably.”

She laughed.

He laughed too.

Then something shifted.

Neither could later explain who moved first.

The kiss was brief.

Almost startled.

They immediately stepped apart.

Elena touched her lips.

“This is complicated.”

“Yes.”

“You are connected to my job.”

“Yes.”

“This stops here.”

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked surprised he agreed so quickly.

He continued.

“Until the power imbalance stops.”

Elena looked at him for a long moment.

“Good.”

The following month, she resigned from her position.

Not because Alexander asked.

Because she had completed the household reforms and helped hire an independent professional successor.

On her final day, Noah hugged her.

“You’re leaving again?”

“My job.”

“You?”

“No.”

Noah thought.

“Good.”

One week later, Alexander called Elena.

“Would you have dinner with me?”

She paused.

“As what?”

“Two adults Noah did not choose for each other.”

May you like

Elena laughed.

“Yes.”
