Chapter 16 - This Time, Alexander ChoseThe greenhouse had belonged to Amelia.

After her death, Alexander rarely entered.

He worried bringing Elena there would feel wrong.

Elena understood immediately.

“You don’t have to prove anything by bringing me here.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because avoiding places is still letting grief choose for me.”

She looked around.

Plants had been replanted.

Sunlight fell through old glass.

“This was hers?”

“Yes.”

“Then it should stay part of the family.”

Alexander smiled.

“That’s what I hoped you’d say.”

No cameras.

No photographers.

No Noah carrying a sign.

No Victoria hiding behind a bush.

Just them.

Alexander stopped beside a stone path.

“The first time my family tried to make me choose someone, I refused.”

Elena smiled.

“I remember.”

“The second time, Noah chose.”

“He chose safety.”

“I know.”

Alexander took her hand.

“This time I want the choice to belong to me.”

Then he knelt.

Elena stared.

“Get up.”

Alexander froze.

“What?”

“You’re kneeling on wet stone.”

He looked down.

She started laughing.

So did he.

Alexander stood.

The moment became less cinematic.

More theirs.

He opened the ring box.

“Elena Reyes.”

Her eyes filled.

“Will you marry me?”

She did not answer immediately.

That mattered too.

Alexander waited.

Elena looked at the greenhouse.

At him.

Then:

“Yes.”

Noah’s reaction was less restrained.

He screamed.

Then immediately asked:

“Can I choose cake?”

Elena answered:

“No.”

His face fell.

Alexander laughed.

Victoria heard about the engagement that evening.

She sat silently for several seconds.

Then:

“Have you considered—”

Alexander raised one eyebrow.

Victoria stopped.

Elena nearly laughed.

Victoria sighed.

“Fine.”

Then she looked at Elena.

“May I at least suggest a florist?”

Elena considered.

“One.”

Victoria smiled.

Progress.

The press exploded.

Former Maid to Become Mrs. Whitmore.

Cinderella Headlines Return.

Elena ignored most of them.

The old shame still appeared occasionally.

But it no longer controlled the room.

Then something unexpected happened.

Catherine called.

“Congratulations.”

Elena smiled.

“Thank you.”

Olivia sent flowers from London.

Vanessa sent nothing.

For three weeks.

Then a handwritten note arrived.

Elena opened it alone.

I hope all of you eventually get to be people instead of positions.

No signature was necessary.

Elena kept it.

Not because Vanessa deserved immediate absolution.

Because the sentence deserved remembering.

The wedding planning began.

Victoria suggested six hundred guests.

Elena wanted forty.

Alexander said:

“I would like to survive the event.”

They settled at seventy-eight.

One evening Noah found Alexander reviewing the guest list.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“You chose Elena?”

Alexander smiled.

“Yes.”

“Not me?”

“No.”

Noah considered.

Then nodded.

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because if it goes bad, not my fault.”

Alexander laughed so hard Victoria came in to ask what happened.

Noah repeated it.

Victoria laughed too.

For one brief moment, nobody was a billionaire.

Nobody was a trustee.

Nobody was an heir.

Nobody was a maid.

They were simply a family laughing in a kitchen.

Then the wedding week arrived.

And with it, one final decision about Amelia.

Her photograph.

Victoria wanted it removed from the main hall during the ceremony.

Elena said:

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Victoria frowned.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Elena looked at Alexander.

“She existed.”

Alexander’s throat tightened.

Elena continued.

“Loving me should not require hiding her.”

Alexander knew then that Noah had been right long before any adult understood why.

May you like

Elena saw people before positions.

Even a woman who was no longer there.
