Chapter 6 - The Disciplinary ConferenceThe conference took place the following Monday.

Principal Adrienne Kline attended.
So did Brooks.
Mrs. Harper arrived with Dean Harper.
Owen noticed immediately that Dean carried himself like someone accustomed to controlling rooms.
Dark suit.
Silver watch.
No wasted movement.
Jayden sat between his parents.
Officer Grant sat near the wall.
Principal Kline began.
“We are addressing two issues separately. Jayden’s physical contact with Mrs. Harper, and the allegations concerning Mrs. Harper’s conduct preceding that contact.”
Dean interrupted.
“My wife was assaulted by a student.”
Owen said, “And my son was struck with a ruler.”
Dean looked at him.
“That allegation is unsupported.”
Rosa slid a phone across the table.
“No.”
Dean’s expression changed.
Mia’s video began.
Nobody moved.
The room heard Mrs. Harper’s whisper.
“Maybe now your father will reconsider that waterfront offer.”
Then the ruler.
The insult.
Jayden rising.
The slap.
His response.
When the video ended, silence followed.
Dean looked at his wife.
Mrs. Harper looked at the table.
Principal Kline’s face had gone rigid.
“Why did you mention his father’s waterfront offer?”
Mrs. Harper swallowed.
“I don’t remember saying that.”
“You just heard yourself.”
“I may have been referring to something Jayden mentioned previously.”
“I never mentioned it,” Jayden said.
Dean placed a hand on his wife’s arm.
“We should be careful about drawing conclusions from an illegally recorded classroom video.”
Owen stared at him.
“You’re worried about the recording?”
Dean ignored him.
Grant spoke.
“The hallway audio supports the insult.”
Dean turned.
“You have no authority to interpret—”
“I have authority to report what I heard.”
Principal Kline raised both hands.
“That’s enough.”
She turned toward Mrs. Harper.
“Did you strike Jayden with the ruler?”
“No.”
Jayden clenched his jaw.
Kline replayed the video frame by frame.
The angle did not show clear contact.
But Jayden’s immediate reaction was visible.
So was the redness afterward in photographs taken by Rosa.
Kline took a breath.
“Mrs. Harper, effective immediately, you are being placed on administrative leave pending investigation.”
Dean stood.
“This is absurd.”
Mrs. Harper remained seated.
Her face had gone completely white.
Brooks spoke.
“Adrienne, perhaps we should discuss—”
“No.”
Kline looked at her.
“We will discuss your involvement separately.”
Brooks froze.
Owen noticed.
So did Grant.
The conference continued.
Jayden’s punishment remained.
Three days of suspension already served, plus two additional days converted to in-school suspension.
Jayden looked at his father.
Owen nodded.
Accept it.
Jayden did.
He had slapped a teacher.
The video explained why.
It did not erase what he did.
Then Principal Kline said something nobody expected.
“The district has received a settlement proposal.”
Rosa frowned.
“From whom?”
Dean answered.
“Voss Harbor Partners.”
Owen laughed.
“This isn’t a property meeting.”
“They are offering to withdraw all pending acquisition efforts and compensate your family for business disruption.”
“How much?”
“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
Rosa stared at him.
“In exchange for what?”
Dean slid a document across the table.
Owen read the first page.
Confidentiality.
Non-disparagement.
Release of claims against Voss.
Release of claims against Harper Community Consulting.
Withdrawal of complaints against Mrs. Harper.
Jayden watched his father close the document.
Dean said quietly, “This could end today.”
Owen pushed the paper back.
“No.”
Dean’s expression tightened.
“You should consider the financial condition of your business.”
That sentence changed the room.
Owen leaned forward.
“How do you know the financial condition of my business?”
Dean said nothing.
Nathan had shared it.
But Dean had just admitted he knew.
Principal Kline slowly turned toward him.
May you like
Dean realized the mistake.
Too late.
