Chapter 15 - The Board MeetingThe school board meeting filled the auditorium.

Parents stood along the walls.

Students sat together in clusters.

Reporters waited near the back.

Jayden did not want to speak.

Then Sophie Bennett found him.

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t.”

She looked toward the stage.

“When it happened to me, I thought being quiet would make it disappear.”

Jayden went to the microphone.

His hands trembled.

“My name is Jayden Cole.”

The room quieted.

“I hit Mrs. Harper.”

Some people shifted.

“I’m not proud of that.”

His father watched from the front row.

“My parents didn’t teach me to hit people. Mrs. Harper insulting them does not make my slap right.”

He swallowed.

“But what I did wrong does not make everything she did before it right either.”

Nobody moved.

“She made me kneel. She used a ruler. She insulted my family. And evidence shows adults were trying to pressure my family because of our property.”

Jayden looked toward the board.

“The worst part is not that adults did bad things.”

His voice steadied.

“It’s that they thought nobody would believe a kid if the adult told the story first.”

Officer Grant lowered his eyes.

Jayden finished.

“So believe evidence. Not uniforms. Not job titles. Not money. Evidence.”

He stepped away.

Rosa was crying.

Owen wasn’t.

But his jaw trembled.

After public comment, the superintendent announced preliminary findings.

Mrs. Harper’s employment termination process had begun.

Brooks faced dismissal proceedings.

An external audit of Educational Foundation payments was underway.

New rules would require documented reporting whenever physical disciplinary practices were alleged.

No victory felt complete.

But the room had shifted.

Mrs. Harper was no longer controlling the story.
