Chapter 2 - The Story Claire Wanted Everyone to BelieveBy dinner, Claire's version of the incident had spread through the house without Claire ever officially telling it.

That was the genius of her performance.

She had never said Noah attacked her.

She simply allowed everyone else to believe it.

Noah remained upstairs until his father entered his room shortly after eight.

Daniel shut the door.

“We need to talk.”

Noah sat at his desk.

“About how your wife framed me?”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Claire isn't pressing anything.”

“Pressing anything?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Police charges.”

Noah laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“For something I didn't do?”

“Keep your voice down.”

“Why?”

“Because she's downstairs trying to keep this family together.”

Noah stood.

“She tore her own shirt.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“She has scratches on her neck.”

“She made them.”

“You expect me to believe she did that and then jumped into the pool?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

That stopped Noah.

He didn't know.

Daniel saw the hesitation.

“Exactly.”

Noah moved toward the window.

“What if I can prove it?”

Daniel stared at him.

“How?”

“The pool camera.”

Something passed across Daniel's face.

Surprise.

Then uncertainty.

“The camera hasn't worked in weeks.”

Noah turned.

“What?”

“Claire told me security was having problems with it.”

Of course she had.

“When?”

“I don't remember.”

“Before today?”

“Yes.”

Noah felt the small hope inside him collapse.

Daniel walked closer.

“I need you to understand how serious this looks.”

“No. You need to understand how serious what she did is.”

“Noah—”

“You hit me.”

Daniel's face changed.

For the first time, shame appeared.

“I shouldn't have.”

“But you did.”

“I was angry.”

“At me.”

“I thought—”

“You didn't think.”

The words landed harder than Noah intended.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Then Noah asked the question that mattered.

“Are you going to apologize?”

Daniel looked at him.

“I just said I shouldn't have done it.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Noah almost laughed again.

Even now his father couldn't say the words.

I'm sorry.

Daniel turned toward the door.

“I think it would be better if you stayed home tomorrow.”

“Suspended from my own life?”

“Noah.”

“You believe her.”

Daniel paused.

“I believe something happened.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

Daniel left.

Noah stood alone.

Downstairs, Claire was waiting.

She was sitting at the kitchen island wearing one of Daniel's oversized shirts when he entered.

Her scratches were still visible.

“You spoke to him?”

“Yes.”

“Is he okay?”

Daniel stared at her.

Claire's voice was soft.

Careful.

“He looked so angry before I fell. I don't want him thinking I blame him.”

Daniel poured himself water.

“Did he push you?”

Claire looked wounded.

“Daniel.”

“I need you to tell me.”

Claire looked down.

“I don't remember exactly.”

That answer was stronger than an accusation.

Daniel's grip tightened around the glass.

Claire continued.

“I was upset. Noah was upset. We argued.”

“What about your blouse?”

Claire touched the damaged fabric resting in an evidence bag Daniel had insisted no one throw away.

“I don't know.”

“Claire.”

She closed her eyes.

“I don't want to destroy your relationship with your son.”

Daniel looked away.

Claire reached for his hand.

“He's sixteen. He's angry. Sixteen-year-olds make terrible decisions.”

Daniel swallowed.

Then Claire planted the final seed.

“Maybe this is bigger than today.”

Daniel turned back.

“What does that mean?”

Claire immediately shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“What?”

“I shouldn't have said anything.”

“Claire.”

She hesitated.

“Things have been disappearing.”

Daniel frowned.

“What things?”

“Cash. Jewelry. A key to your office.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I thought I misplaced them.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Noah already thinks I don't want him here.”

Daniel sat opposite her.

“You think he's stealing?”

“I didn't say that.”

Again.

Never the accusation.

Always the implication.

Upstairs, Noah couldn't sleep.

At midnight, he left his room for water.

On his way back, he noticed light beneath the door of Daniel's home office.

Claire was inside.

Noah stopped before she could see him.

Through the narrow opening, he watched her unlock Daniel's desk.

She removed a folder.

Then photographed several pages with her phone.

Noah didn't move.

Claire placed everything exactly where she had found it and left by the opposite hallway.

Only after she disappeared did Noah enter.

The folder was labeled:

REED FAMILY ESTATE — REVISED DRAFT

Noah opened it.

His name appeared on the first page.

So did Claire's.

And beside several paragraphs were handwritten notes from Daniel's attorney.

One sentence had been underlined twice.

Upon Noah Reed reaching age eighteen…

Noah read the rest.

Then he finally understood.

Whatever Claire was doing wasn't only about making Daniel hate him.

It was about what Noah would inherit.
