Chapter 13 - Mark RunsMark's office had been cleaned out.

Laptop gone.

Personal files gone.

Company phone left on the desk.

Reed Horizon's treasury team discovered three unauthorized transfers totaling $6.8 million.

Two had cleared.

The third had been frozen.

Daniel contacted federal investigators and local counsel.

By midnight the mansion was full of lawyers and security personnel.

Claire stayed upstairs.

Noah found that more suspicious than panic.

“She knew,” he told Daniel.

Daniel didn't answer.

He was reading bank records.

“Dad.”

“I heard you.”

“She knew he would run.”

“We don't know that.”

Noah slammed his hand on the desk.

“Stop saying that.”

Daniel looked up.

Noah continued.

“Every time evidence points at Claire, you say we don't know.”

Daniel stood.

“I am dealing with the possible collapse of my company.”

“And I'm dealing with your wife trying to destroy my life.”

Daniel's expression softened.

Noah hated that too.

Pity was not enough.

Rebecca entered.

“We traced one of the Cedar Ridge transfers.”

Daniel turned.

“To where?”

“A company in Nevada.”

“Owned by?”

Rebecca placed documents on the desk.

“Nominee manager. But the beneficial ownership filing lists Claire.”

Silence.

Daniel slowly looked toward the ceiling as if he could see through it to the bedroom above.

Noah whispered, “There.”

Daniel didn't move.

Rebecca continued.

“Claire received at least $1.1 million.”

Daniel sat.

Something inside him seemed to collapse.

“Why?”

Noah watched his father.

Not businessman Daniel.

Not angry father Daniel.

A husband realizing his marriage might be built around a theft.

Rebecca said, “We need to secure accounts immediately.”

Daniel nodded mechanically.

“Do it.”

Noah asked, “And Claire?”

Daniel stood.

“Stay here.”

He walked upstairs.

Noah followed despite Rebecca telling him not to.

Daniel entered the bedroom.

Claire sat on the edge of the bed.

A packed suitcase rested beside her.

Daniel stopped.

“So you were leaving.”

Claire looked up.

“I knew this would happen.”

“What?”

“Mark would run.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“You knew?”

“He told me this morning.”

Noah stepped into the doorway.

Daniel turned.

“I told you to stay downstairs.”

Claire laughed softly.

“Let him stay.”

Daniel looked back.

“Did you take money from my company?”

Claire stared at him.

“Yes.”

Noah hadn't expected the admission.

Neither had Daniel.

“How much?”

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“Mark handled most of it.”

Daniel's voice rose.

“How much?”

Claire flinched.

“About a million.”

“Why?”

“To protect myself.”

“From what?”

“From you.”

Daniel stared.

Claire stood.

“You think you're the victim?”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

“No, Daniel.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

Real ones this time.

“Mark told me about Denver before our second date.”

Daniel went still.

Noah felt the room change.

Claire continued.

“He told me you were rich, guilty and terrified.”

Daniel whispered, “You knew Mark before me.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He introduced us.”

Noah stared.

Daniel took one step backward.

The marriage hadn't happened naturally.

Mark had arranged it.

Claire continued.

“At first I was supposed to get close to you.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Supposed to?”

“Mark needed access.”

“To what?”

“Your schedule. Your home. Your passwords. Your trust.”

Daniel looked physically sick.

Noah whispered, “You married him as part of the scheme.”

Claire looked toward Noah.

“At first.”

Daniel caught the words.

“At first?”

Claire turned back.

“I didn't expect to love you.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Don't.”

“I did.”

“Don't you dare.”

“I did!”

Her voice broke.

Daniel stared at her.

Claire continued.

“That became the problem.”

“What problem?”

“Mark wanted more.”

Noah stepped closer.

“And you kept helping him.”

Claire looked at him.

“Yes.”

Noah's jaw tightened.

“The pool.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“Tell me.”

Claire opened her eyes.

No longer pretending.

“I staged it.”

The words entered the room like a gunshot.

Daniel stared at her.

Noah said nothing.

He had wanted this moment.

Now it felt empty.

Daniel asked, “Why?”

Claire looked toward Noah.

“Because Mark said Daniel would never change the estate unless he believed Noah could become dangerous.”

Daniel's face twisted.

“You used my son.”

Claire whispered, “Yes.”

Noah finally spoke.

“And the slap?”

Claire looked at him.

“I didn't know he would hit you.”

“You knew exactly what you were doing.”

“I knew he would protect me.”

Noah's voice shook.

“That is the same thing.”

Claire looked down.

Then Daniel asked the question nobody had considered.

“Where is Mark?”

Claire's head lifted.

“I don't know.”

Daniel stared.

Claire swallowed.

“He thinks I betrayed him.”

Rebecca appeared behind Noah.

“What did you do?”

Claire looked toward the window.

“I kept copies.”

“Of what?”

Claire answered:

May you like

“Everything.”

And somewhere outside the mansion, a car door slammed.
