Chapter 16 - What Claire Had Been HidingClaire's attorney advised her to stop talking.

She ignored him for exactly twelve minutes.

Long enough to tell Daniel the part she had hidden even from Mark.

They sat in the library.

Noah remained because Claire insisted.

“I need him to hear this.”

Daniel stared coldly.

Claire held a folder from the storage unit.

“Leah contacted me.”

Noah's breath caught.

“When?”

“Three weeks before she died.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

Claire continued.

“She remembered me from the office.”

Noah stared.

“You said you never spoke to her.”

“I didn't then.”

“But later?”

“Yes.”

Claire removed a printed email.

It was from Leah.

You may not understand what you're involved in. If Mark Ellison is paying you, stop accepting his money and speak to an attorney.

Noah read it twice.

His mother had tried to warn Claire.

“What did you do?”

Claire looked ashamed.

“I forwarded it to Mark.”

Noah felt sick.

“You betrayed her.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Mark told me Leah was paranoid because of her illness.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“You believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

Claire looked toward Noah.

“I was twenty-nine, broke, divorced and drowning in debt. Mark paid me well.”

“And then Mom died.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“From cancer, Noah. Nothing happened to her.”

He knew.

He hadn't meant that.

But the timing felt cruel.

Claire continued.

“After Leah died, Mark kept me around.”

Daniel asked, “To target me?”

“Not immediately.”

“When?”

“Two years later.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“He planned this for years.”

“Yes.”

“Why me?”

“Because you controlled the company and Mark couldn't move larger amounts without closer access.”

Daniel looked at the floor.

Claire continued.

“He knew your grief made you isolated. He knew your schedule. Your habits. What restaurants you liked.”

Noah stared at her.

“Our marriage was researched.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“At first.”

Daniel slammed the folder shut.

“Stop saying that.”

“It's true.”

“No. It's useful.”

Claire flinched.

Daniel continued.

“You want the part where you loved me to erase everything before it.”

“It doesn't.”

“Good.”

Claire's eyes filled.

“It made everything worse.”

“How?”

“Because I started hiding things from Mark.”

She pointed toward the storage boxes.

“I copied his records. I moved part of the money where he couldn't access it. I tried to convince you to sell your controlling shares.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“To get you out.”

“Out of what?”

“Reed Horizon.”

Noah frowned.

Claire continued.

“Mark wasn't only stealing. He was preparing to force Daniel out and sell company assets to a private-equity buyer.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“He couldn't.”

“With Denver and your signatures, he thought he could.”

“My signatures?”

Claire opened another file.

Several documents carried Daniel's electronic signature.

He stared.

“I never signed these.”

“I know.”

Noah understood.

“Claire gave Mark Dad's passwords.”

She nodded.

Daniel sat heavily.

Claire's voice broke.

“At first I thought Mark only wanted money. Then I realized he wanted the company.”

Daniel looked at her.

“So you framed Noah because?”

“Because Mark told me if Noah reached eighteen with Leah's voting shares, he would block any restructuring.”

Noah stared.

“Which I would've.”

“Yes.”

“So you needed Dad to distrust me.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked sick.

“The plan was to move Daniel's shares into a trust I could vote temporarily. Mark would push the sale. Then we'd leave.”

“Leave?”

Daniel laughed.

“You mean rob me and disappear.”

Claire whispered, “At first.”

Daniel looked away.

Noah suddenly understood the terrible complexity.

Claire had betrayed Daniel.

Then betrayed Mark.

Then betrayed Noah to protect the first betrayal.

Every new lie had been built to hide an older one.

Rebecca entered carrying another document.

“We found Mark.”

Everyone stood.

“Where?”

“He hasn't been arrested.”

“Then what do you mean?”

“His vehicle was located at a private airfield.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“Plane?”

“Charter reservation under another name.”

Claire went pale.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Noah looked at the clock.

Five hours.

Rebecca continued.

“And investigators believe he has the only unredacted copy of the Denver payment agreement.”

Daniel knew immediately.

If Mark escaped with it, he would always possess leverage.

Noah looked at his father.

Daniel had spent eight years hiding Denver.

Now everything depended on one decision.

Protect the company again.

Or tell the truth before Mark could weaponize it.
