Chapter 9 - Owen Vale

Owen Vale looked nothing like Vanessa.
Dark hair.
Heavy beard.
Work jacket.
But they had the same eyes when cornered.
He met investigators with his lawyer.
Daniel later received only information legally shared through his corporate counsel.
Owen admitted Northline was his company.
He denied inventing the scheme.
According to him, his father started Northline to help him establish a supply brokerage.
Vanessa, already working temporary accounts payable at Hart Residential, suggested Northline could bid on materials.
That alone was not illegal.
The fraud began when real purchase orders were copied and rebilled.
Owen said Vanessa told him Hart’s controls were “lazy.”
Daniel flinched when he heard the word.
They had been.
Owen claimed the siblings split profits.
Vanessa received transfers disguised as consulting fees.
How much?
Approximately $82,000 over the life of Northline.
Owen kept the remainder and paid some to suppliers.
“Did Emily discover it?” Daniel asked Elena.
“Owen says yes.”
Daniel became still.
“What happened?”
“He says Vanessa told him ‘the owner’s wife is asking questions.’”
“And?”
“Owen wanted to shut Northline down.”
“Vanessa?”
Elena read from notes.
“She allegedly said they could correct records gradually.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
Replace it later.
Temporary.
Again.
“What did they do?”
“Northline stopped invoicing six weeks before Emily’s surgery.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Did Vanessa ever threaten Emily?”
“No evidence.”
“Did Owen?”
“No evidence.”
“Did either have anything to do with Emily’s death?”
Elena looked directly at him.
“No evidence whatsoever.”
Daniel nodded.
He needed that said aloud.
Grief invited ugly imagination.
Emily died from documented medical complications.
Not every betrayal needed to become murder.
“What happened to Vanessa’s share?”
“Unknown.”
Owen believed she used it to help their mother, Lorraine, avoid foreclosure.
Daniel thought of the current $9,800 transfer to Lorraine.
Same pattern.
Family emergency.
Secret money.
Temporary solution.
Maybe Vanessa had spent her entire adult life trying to save her family with money that belonged to other people.
That did not make her noble.
It made the pattern understandable.
Rachel asked Owen one question through attorneys.
Why had Vanessa returned to Daniel’s life?
Owen claimed he did not know.
Then investigators recovered an old message.
Vanessa to Owen, months after Emily died:
Hart hasn’t reopened the old AP review. Robert left. I think it’s dead.
Six months later:
Saw Daniel at foundation event. He looks different.
Then:
He asked me to dinner.
That mattered.
Vanessa had not engineered the initial date according to the messages.
Daniel had.
The discovery confused him.
Part of him wanted proof she had hunted him from the beginning.
It would make everything simple.
Instead Vanessa appeared to have reentered his orbit intentionally enough to know he would attend the fundraiser—but their relationship itself grew after he pursued her.
He had chosen her.
That was harder.
Rachel seemed almost relieved.
“So the whole marriage wasn’t a cover.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You sound happy about that.”
“I don’t want you to believe your life was fake.”
“What if I do?”
“Then she still controls your memories.”
Daniel hated how often Rachel was right.
The old fraud investigation expanded.
Owen offered restitution and cooperation.
Whether criminal prosecution was possible depended on evidence and legal timing.
Civil recovery was clearer.
Hart Residential sued Northline and Owen.
Vanessa became part of the corporate claim.
Meanwhile her current criminal case involving Rachel moved forward.
Everything converged.
Past fraud.
Current fraud.
The crawlspace.
Yet Daniel sensed something missing.
Why had Emily’s file been under the house?
Rachel had not put it there.
Daniel had not.
Vanessa denied knowing about it.
Carol did not.
The remodeling contractor might.
Daniel found the project records from two years earlier.
A note:
Existing crawlspace contents relocated per homeowner instruction.
Homeowner instruction.
Signed:
Vanessa Hart.
Daniel stared at it.
She had known something was stored below.
Maybe not Emily’s file specifically.
But she had ordered boxes moved there.
Another line listed:
3 storage bins + 1 blue document pouch.
Daniel’s pulse increased.
Blue document pouch.
Emily’s.
Vanessa had seen it.
May you like
Whether she opened it remained unknown.
But one more denial had cracked.
