Chapter 1 - Someone Under the House

Sophie Hart was already crying when Daniel walked into the family room.

She stood barefoot beside the red Persian rug, clutching a blue plush dinosaur so tightly its green fabric spikes folded beneath her small fingers.

Daniel noticed the scratches first.

Two faint red marks crossed the bridge of her nose. Another touched her forehead.

“Sophie?”

His three-year-old daughter ran toward him.

“Dad, someone’s breathing underneath the house!”

Daniel stopped.

Across the room Vanessa turned sharply.

His wife had been standing near the dining-room doorway in a cream-colored sweater, one hand resting against the counter.

“She’s lying!”

Daniel looked at her.

The speed of the answer disturbed him more than the words.

Sophie sobbed.

“Dad!”

Daniel crouched.

“Where did you hear it?”

She pointed toward the hardwood floor near the edge of the rug.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She has been making things up all afternoon.”

Daniel looked at Sophie’s tear-streaked face.

Three-year-olds imagined monsters.

They misheard pipes.

They turned shadows into people.

But Sophie was not describing a monster.

She was describing breathing.

Daniel moved toward the section of floor.

Vanessa’s voice changed.

“Daniel, don’t!”

He stopped.

The room became strangely quiet.

Daniel looked back.

Vanessa’s eyes were no longer annoyed.

They were afraid.

“Why?”

“I just—”

She swallowed.

“There could be mold under there. Or animals. You shouldn’t open anything with Sophie here.”

Daniel stared.

He had lived in the house for eight years.

He knew the crawlspace access was somewhere beneath the hardwood because a contractor had mentioned it during renovations, but he had never used it.

Then he saw the seam.

A narrow rectangular outline followed the direction of the floorboards.

Sophie clung to the back of his shirt as he knelt.

“Stay behind me.”

He ran his fingers along the edge.

Vanessa whispered his name again.

“Daniel.”

He found the recessed grip.

The panel lifted with resistance.

Cold air rose from darkness.

Vanessa pressed both hands near her mouth.

“Oh my God...”

Daniel froze.

He had expected earth.

Pipes.

Insulation.

Maybe a raccoon.

Instead, something shifted below.

Sophie wrapped one arm around his shoulder, still holding the blue dinosaur under the other.

“Dad, there’s someone down there...”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Hello?”

No answer.

Then—

breathing.

Slow.

Weak.

Human.

His eyes adjusted.

There was a shape beneath the floor.

A shoulder.

Hair.

A hand.

Daniel’s heart slammed against his ribs.

“Can you hear me?”

The hand moved.

He reached downward.

“Vanessa, call 911.”

She did not move.

Daniel looked back.

“Call 911!”

Her face had become almost gray.

Daniel turned toward the darkness again.

The person below shifted enough for a narrow beam of afternoon light to fall across one wrist.

A silver bracelet.

Daniel knew that bracelet.

He had bought it nine years earlier as a Christmas gift.

Not for Vanessa.

For someone else.

Someone Vanessa had told him left town yesterday morning.

Daniel’s blood went cold.

He looked down again.

A face turned weakly toward the opening.

Dirty.

Terrified.

Alive.

Daniel recognized her.

Rachel Bennett.

His late wife Emily’s younger sister.

Sophie’s aunt.

The woman Vanessa had claimed boarded a flight to Seattle nearly thirty hours earlier.

Rachel’s lips moved.

No sound came.

Daniel rose slowly.

Vanessa backed away.

“Daniel, listen to me—”

He turned fully toward her.

Horror became anger.

“What have you done?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“It isn’t what you think.”

Daniel stared at her.

Below them Rachel dragged in another broken breath.

Daniel reached for his phone.

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the front door.

Daniel saw it.

May you like

And understood that whatever explanation she planned to give him—

she was already trying to run from it.
