Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Story

Vanessa was arrested forty-eight hours later.
Not for financial fraud.
Not yet.
For what happened to Rachel.
The prosecutor initially charged her with unlawful imprisonment and assault based on Rachel’s statement, physical evidence, the crawlspace, and messages recovered from Vanessa’s phone after a warrant.
Daniel did not attend the arraignment.
Rachel did.
Vanessa was released on bond with orders not to contact Rachel and not to enter Hawthorne House.
She could communicate with Daniel only about necessary property matters through attorneys.
That lasted four days.
Then Daniel received a letter through Vanessa’s lawyer.
It was six pages.
He almost threw it away.
Grace told him to read it once.
Vanessa’s version began with the business.
Vale Home & Design had expanded too quickly.
She signed a five-year lease.
A major commercial client defaulted.
Suppliers demanded payment.
She borrowed.
Then borrowed to repay borrowing.
She did not tell Daniel because she was ashamed.
When she finally asked Daniel for $75,000 and he refused, she interpreted the refusal as proof he never considered her fully part of his family.
Daniel stopped reading.
Rachel sat across the kitchen table.
“Keep going.”
“I know what she’s going to say.”
“No. You know what you think she’ll say.”
He hated when Rachel sounded like Grace.
He continued.
Vanessa wrote that Hawthorne House had become a symbol.
Half belonged to Sophie’s trust because of Emily.
Vanessa believed Daniel would always protect Emily’s money before their marriage.
She convinced herself borrowing against the property temporarily was different from taking it.
She intended to repay the line when she sold remaining business inventory.
Then Rachel discovered the disclosure.
According to Vanessa, Rachel came to Hawthorne furious and accused her of being a thief.
The argument became physical.
Vanessa claimed Rachel grabbed her first.
Rachel laughed when Daniel read that.
“Did you?”
“I grabbed the paperwork.”
“Not her?”
“No.”
Vanessa wrote that Rachel fell accidentally.
When Rachel woke, Vanessa panicked.
She feared Rachel would call police immediately.
The crawlspace panel was already open because Vanessa had been retrieving stored boxes.
She asked Rachel to hide there “for a few minutes” while she thought.
Rachel refused.
Vanessa admitted taking Rachel’s phone.
She admitted closing the panel.
She insisted she planned to reopen it.
Then Sophie woke from her nap.
Vanessa became afraid the child would see Rachel.
She delayed.
Then Daniel texted that he was leaving work early.
Panic became paralysis.
Vanessa wrote:
Every minute I waited made the next minute harder to undo.
Daniel stopped.
Rachel looked away.
“That part I believe,” she said.
Daniel continued.
Vanessa denied knowing about Emily’s file in the crawlspace.
She denied involvement in any old company fraud.
She said Emily had questioned invoices years ago but nothing came of it.
Daniel stared at that sentence.
Vanessa had just confirmed something.
She knew Emily investigated her.
Yet she had never mentioned it.
The final page read:
I love you. I love Sophie. I know you don’t believe that right now. I made terrible decisions because I was afraid of losing the life we built. Please do not let Rachel turn this into a story where every day of our marriage was fake.
Daniel folded the letter.
Rachel said nothing.
“What?”
“You expect me to tell you what to feel.”
“Do I?”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked toward the family room.
The floor panel had been temporarily sealed by investigators.
“I don’t know what to feel.”
“That’s probably healthier.”
He looked at Rachel.
“Do you think she loved Sophie?”
Rachel considered.
“Yes.”
Daniel was surprised.
“After what she did?”
“She didn’t put Sophie under the house.”
“She called her a liar.”
“Yes.”
“She used a house half owned by Sophie as collateral.”
“Yes.”
“She risked—”
“I’m not defending her.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“You keep wanting every part of her to match the worst thing she did.”
Daniel became quiet.
Rachel continued.
“People can love someone and still behave selfishly toward them.”
“You sound like you’ve rehearsed that.”
Rachel’s face changed.
Daniel caught it.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Rachel.”
She sighed.
“I didn’t come only because of the bank letter.”
Daniel stared.
“What else?”
“I had been looking through Emily’s storage.”
“Why?”
“Because I was thinking about closing it.”
“And?”
“I found an external hard drive.”
Daniel’s pulse changed.
“What was on it?”
“Company records.”
“How long have you had it?”
“Six weeks.”
Daniel stood.
“Six weeks?”
“I didn’t know what it meant.”
“You didn’t call me.”
“No.”
“Again.”
Rachel flinched.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Apparently everyone who loves me protects me by hiding information.”
“That’s fair.”
“Where is the drive?”
Rachel reached into her bag.
“It’s with Grace now.”
Daniel stared.
“You already gave it to her?”
“Yes.”
“What is on it?”
May you like
Rachel’s next words turned Vanessa’s letter into something much smaller.
“Records from the year before Emily died.”
