Chapter 20 - Monica Puts Down the Phone

A year after the video, Monica stood behind the same oak tree.

She was taking a picture of Ethan riding Willow.

He spotted her.

“Are you spying again?”

She laughed.

“No.”

“Suspicious location.”

“Good shade.”

He rode closer.

Monica held up the phone.

“Photo?”

Ethan thought.

“Okay.”

Permission.

She took it.

The contrast mattered.

First recording secret because safety required it.

Now photo open because trust allowed it.

Monica showed him.

Ethan grimaced.

“I look weird.”

“You are weird.”

He laughed.

Daniel watched from porch.

He had come to appreciate Monica's willingness to act.

But also her boundaries.

She no longer positioned herself as Ethan's protector against everything.

She was family-like.

Not substitute parent.

Not spy.

Healthy roles.

That evening Monica deleted the personal copy of the original stable video.

Official legal copies remained archived.

She asked Ethan first.

“Do you want it?”

“No.”

“Sure?”

“Yes.”

She pressed delete.

The thumbnail vanished.

Ethan felt nothing.

Good.

Evidence had done its job.

Truth no longer depended on Monica's phone.
