Chapter 7 - The Families Who Defended DeniseNot everyone believed Clayton.

Once word of the separation spread through the rural community, opinions arrived without invitation.

Denise had organized a fundraiser when Luke’s wife needed surgery.

She had helped a farmhand find housing.

She negotiated a better milk-hauling contract.

She volunteered at Mason’s school.

People knew that Denise.

One dairy cooperative member told Clayton:

“You’re letting a little boy’s tantrum destroy a marriage.”

Clayton nearly hit him.

He didn’t.

Instead:

“He called me crying from a locked barn.”

The man looked away.

Another neighbor said:

“I slept in barns as a kid.”

“Were you seven?”

“Probably.”

“Were you locked in as punishment?”

Silence.

Online comments appeared after someone mentioned the situation in a local farm group.

Farm kids today are soft.

Cows are safer than people.

Sounds like discipline, not abuse.

Wyatt did not see them.

Clayton made sure of that.

Rachel approved.

“You don’t need to show a child strangers debating whether his fear was legitimate.”

The division taught Clayton something.

Denise had built goodwill.

Real goodwill.

That made accountability harder.

People wanted victims and villains to come pre-labeled.

They rarely did.

Denise could help Luke’s wife and hurt Wyatt.

She could improve milk contracts and hide conflicts.

Both were true.

Then one person changed everything.

Ben Shaw.

Cedar Hollow’s accountant.

He contacted Rachel voluntarily.

“I should have questioned Riverstone sooner.”

“What did you know?”

“Denise said Clayton approved a management structure.”

“Did you verify?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Ben looked ashamed.

“She brought the farm back from the edge.”

Clayton almost laughed.

Again.

Success had become permission.

Ben handed over emails.

One from Denise:

Clayton is overwhelmed with herd operations. Route all restructuring questions through me.

Another:

Wyatt trust issues are family matters. Do not involve outside counsel unless I authorize.

Rachel’s eyebrows rose.

“She was trying to keep me out.”

Clayton remembered why.

Rachel had written Emma’s trust.

She knew exactly what Denise could not legally do.
