Chapter 16 - Ben Shaw’s ConsequenceBen Shaw was not charged with anything.

He had not stolen.

Had not forged.

Had not personally profited from Riverstone.

His failure was quieter.

He saw related-party payments.

Accepted Denise’s explanations.

Did not insist on proper approvals.

Why?

Because Cedar Hollow was a valuable client.

Because Denise answered emails.

Because Clayton did not.

Because questioning her risked conflict.

Ben resigned as the farm’s accountant.

At their final meeting he told Clayton:

“I kept waiting for something obviously wrong.”

Clayton looked at him.

“And?”

“By the time it became obvious, I had already normalized everything smaller.”

Clayton understood.

That was the entire story.

Luke normalized punishment.

Clayton normalized Denise’s resentment.

Ben normalized money transfers.

Everybody waited for a line bright enough to force action.

Denise learned to live just behind that line.
