Chapter 17 - The Final FileThe missing office hard drive was found inside a storage unit Denise rented.

Her attorney disclosed it during property discovery after learning investigators were seeking electronic records.

Most files were ordinary.

Farm documents.

Photos.

Invoices.

Then forensic technicians recovered deleted folders.

One was titled:

CEDAR HOLLOW — FUTURE.

Inside:

Ownership projections.

Solar payments.

Estate scenarios.

And a spreadsheet.

WYATT / TRUST OPTIONS.

Clayton stared at the filename.

Rows included:

Maintain 30% voting.

Convert to nonvoting units.

Buyout at appraised value.

Restructure before age 10.

Future Mason allocation.

None of those concepts were inherently illegal as planning topics.

Then one note changed everything.

C. will resist anything that looks like taking from W. Need frame as farm survival.

Clayton closed his eyes.

Another:

If W. stops wanting farm life, easier.

Rachel read that twice.

Then:

Boarding school later?

Clayton pushed away from the table.

“No.”

Rachel touched the document.

“It is evidence of thinking, not completed action.”

“I know.”

But emotionally, the sentence explained something.

Denise had been trying to make Wyatt dislike Cedar Hollow.

Barn punishments.

Extra chores.

Constant reminders Mason received different treatment.

If Wyatt grew to hate the farm, Clayton might eventually agree selling his interest was best for him.

Not a master conspiracy.

A corrosive goal.

Repeated choices nudging the family toward Denise’s preferred outcome.

Then the final email appeared.

Denise to Great Plains:

Once Clayton understands keeping the farm intact is hurting Wyatt, he’ll sign.

Date:

Four days before the barn.

The night Wyatt knocked over the red folder, he had stumbled into the plan before Denise was ready.

And she panicked.
