Chapter 4 - Twenty-Five Minutes

Daniel did not sleep.

At 2:00 a.m., he sat at the kitchen island while rain continued hammering the windows.

He placed three facts side by side.

Mia fell at 3:17.

Victor’s meeting notice was issued at 3:42.

The attached petition was fourteen pages long.

No lawyer wrote fourteen polished pages in twenty-five minutes.

The document had existed beforehand.

Daniel searched the metadata.

Created Friday at 10:06 a.m.

More than a day before the pool incident.

The document title buried in the properties field read:

Emergency Removal of Daniel Whitmore as Trustee — Child Safety Event.

Not “possible event.”

Not “concern.”

Event.

Daniel copied everything to an encrypted drive.

At 6:30 a.m., he called Rebecca Sloan.

Rebecca had been a litigation attorney before becoming general counsel for a renewable-energy firm. She had known Daniel since college and had once represented him in a shareholder dispute.

“I need a trust lawyer,” he said.

“You sound terrible.”

“My sister may have tried to manufacture grounds to remove me from my daughter’s trust.”

Silence.

“Start again.”

He did.

Rebecca arrived at Whitmore House two hours later with coffee, a laptop, and none of the sympathy Daniel feared.

She watched the office footage.

Then the pool footage.

Then examined the petition metadata.

“This,” she said, tapping the screen, “is potentially very bad for them.”

“Potentially?”

“We know Claire entered your office and removed documents. We know Victor assisted. We know a petition describing a child-safety incident existed before the incident.”

“So we have them.”

“No.”

Daniel stared at her.

Rebecca remained calm.

“We have suspicious evidence. Not yet proof of conspiracy.”

“She watched Mia fall.”

“Yes.”

“And walked away.”

“Yes.”

“That’s enough for me.”

“You’re Mia’s father. It should be.”

Rebecca leaned closer.

“But court is different.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“What happens Monday?”

“We attend.”

“You want me to walk into Victor’s office after this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they don’t know exactly what you have.”

Daniel glanced at the mini camera.

Rebecca smiled without humor.

“And uncertainty is currently your greatest advantage.”

She began reviewing the trust materials Daniel possessed.

After forty minutes, she stopped.

“Where’s Schedule C?”

“What?”

“This trust references Schedule C fourteen times.”

Daniel looked.

His copy jumped from Schedule B to Schedule D.

“I never noticed.”

“That’s the point.”

“What would C contain?”

“Likely successor protectors or special distribution rules.”

Claire’s statement returned to him.

Emily.

Then Claire.

Rebecca searched further.

“There’s another problem.”

“What?”

“The notary acknowledgment on your copy is dated March 18.”

“So?”

“Your father was hospitalized March 17 through March 29.”

“He could sign in a hospital.”

“Yes.”

“But?”

Rebecca enlarged the page.

“The notary commission belongs to Elaine Mercer.”

Daniel recognized the name.

Victor Hale’s longtime paralegal.

Rebecca looked at him.

“Do you remember whether she visited your father in the hospital?”

“No.”

“We need medical visitor logs if they still exist.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

Rosa.

He answered immediately.

“Is Mia okay?”

“She’s fine. But there’s someone at the gate.”

“Who?”

“County child protective services.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

“They say they received a report last night.”

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“About what?”

Rosa swallowed.

“Child neglect.”

Daniel looked through the rain-streaked window.

A county vehicle waited beyond the gates.

Rebecca closed her laptop.

“They’re moving faster than I expected.”

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

Rebecca touched his arm.

“Do not get angry.”

“They’re accusing me of neglect because Claire—”

“Exactly.”

She looked directly at him.

“Which means whoever planned this needs you to look unstable.”

The gate intercom buzzed again.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then at the sleeping child monitor beside his coffee.

May you like

He had thought the camera would protect Mia.

Now he realized it might be the only reason he still had her.
