Chapter 18 - The Empty Envelope

Someone had reached Margaret before them.

Not physically.

Psychologically.

A package arrived at her home two days earlier.

Inside was a copy of a complaint accusing her of conspiring with Edmund to manipulate the estate.

The enclosed letter claimed federal investigators were preparing charges.

It was fake.

But convincing.

Margaret panicked.

She checked her safe.

The original codicil envelope was still there.

Sealed.

She grabbed it and headed to the airport.

Only after Daniel called did she open it.

Empty.

The theft had occurred earlier.

Rebecca asked, “Who knew you held it?”

“Edmund. My assistant. Victor.”

“Your assistant?”

“Thomas Keene.”

Daniel searched the name.

Thomas had left Margaret’s office eight months earlier.

Current employer:

Hawthorne Capital.

Rebecca swore.

Margaret agreed to return and provide testimony about the codicil’s contents.

But contents alone were weaker than an original.

Daniel asked, “Did Dad make copies?”

“He said copies were dangerous.”

“Of course he did.”

Edmund had become obsessed with secrecy after decades of concealment.

Now secrecy threatened to erase his final attempt at honesty.

Jonah searched metadata from Victor’s recovered files.

A scan existed.

Partial.

The signature page.

Not the operative clauses.

Rebecca said, “Enough to prove something was signed, not what it contained.”

Claire looked devastated.

“If the codicil is gone, do I still control the trust?”

“No,” Rebecca said. “The forged Schedule C is already collapsing. Margaret’s original trust schedule exists.”

“But Mia doesn’t automatically get my voting shares.”

“Correct.”

Daniel said, “I don’t care about gaining Claire’s shares.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because Hawthorne owns options tied to several minority shareholders.”

Jonah confirmed.

“If Claire loses her rights without a valid transfer clause, some shares may revert into a general estate pool. Hawthorne could litigate for leverage.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

Everything required documents.

Every document had been manipulated.

Mia came home from the hospital the next day.

Daniel stopped working at the front door.

He carried her upstairs.

They built a blanket fort.

For two hours he ignored lawyers.

Mia brought the red ball into the room.

Rosa had recovered it from the pool deck.

Daniel froze.

Mia looked at it.

Then pushed it away.

“No.”

Daniel did not tell her to be brave.

Did not tell her it was only a ball.

He picked it up and put it in a closet.

“Okay.”

That night, he sat beside her bed.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Is water mad?”

He almost smiled.

“No.”

“Pool mad?”

“No.”

“Then Auntie?”

Daniel chose carefully.

“Auntie did something that made you unsafe.”

Mia nodded as though this distinction mattered.

Maybe it did.

After she slept, Daniel returned to the library.

The recorder sat on the desk.

He replayed Edmund’s first statement.

One phrase bothered him.

If you found this, Victor found the others.

Others.

Not other documents.

Others.

Recorders?

Copies?

Daniel searched the hidden compartment again.

Nothing.

Then he noticed three screw holes.

The recorder had originally been mounted beside something else.

A second device.

Perhaps a camera.

WH-LIB-3.

Library three.

Victor’s file had said Identify camera/storage copies.

Daniel examined the old architectural drawings.

A wiring path from the third bookcase led to the basement media room.

The cable had been cut.

But old systems sometimes stored video locally.

The media rack had been replaced two years earlier.

Daniel called the technician who performed the upgrade.

The man remembered removing an obsolete DVR.

“What happened to it?”

“Your father asked me not to dispose of it.”

“Where did it go?”

“He had me box it.”

“And?”

“I gave it to his driver.”

Edmund’s driver was Samuel Pierce.

Retired.

Daniel called.

Samuel remembered.

“I put it in Mr. Whitmore’s storage unit.”

“What storage unit?”

“The one on Dunley Road.”

Daniel had never heard of it.

Samuel gave him the access information.

The next morning, Daniel and Rebecca opened Unit 214.

Inside were boxes of old company files.

Family photographs.

Furniture.

And a DVR.

Jonah’s technician recovered the drive.

Most footage had been overwritten.

One segment remained because Edmund had manually protected it.

Date:

March 14, eleven months earlier.

Victor entered the library.

Claire followed.

Marcus Vale joined them.

They discussed the Hawthorne sale.

Then Victor placed papers on the table.

The camera had audio.

Claire asked:

“What happens if Daniel refuses?”

Victor replied:

“Then we remove Daniel.”

“And if Mia’s trust blocks the sale?”

Victor looked directly toward Claire.

“Then we remove the obstacle.”

Claire on the recording frowned.

“You mean legally.”

Victor did not answer.

Present-day Claire covered her mouth.

The recorded Marcus Vale finally said:

“Victor.”

Victor smiled.

“I said nothing.”

Rebecca stopped playback.

No explicit threat.

But then the recording continued.

Claire left the room.

Marcus remained.

He said:

“The child is off limits.”

Victor replied:

“Everyone is leverage.”

Marcus said:

“If anything happens to her, Hawthorne walks.”

Victor leaned closer.

“You already know too much to walk.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

For the first time, the evidence showed something unexpected.

Marcus Vale may have been part of the fraud.

But he had not agreed to harm Mia.

And Victor had been willing to go further than his partners knew.

Then the library door opened again.

A fourth person entered.

Thomas Keene.

Margaret’s former assistant.

He handed Victor an envelope.

Victor asked:

“The codicil?”

Thomas nodded.

Daniel went cold.

The codicil had been stolen eleven months ago.

Margaret’s sealed envelope had been empty ever since.

Victor opened it.

Read it.

Then did something no one expected.

He handed it to Claire.

Recorded Claire looked at the pages and said:

“Mia gets control if I’m found guilty of fraud?”

Victor answered:

“Yes.”

Claire stared at the document.

Then said:

“Destroy it.”

Present-day Claire collapsed into a chair.

Daniel looked at his sister.

She had spent days claiming she did not know.

May you like

But the camera had seen everything.

Again.
