Chapter 16 - After the Water

Mia had developed mild aspiration pneumonia.

The pediatrician assured Daniel it was treatable.

That did not stop him from blaming himself.

He sat beside her hospital bed while antibiotics ran through a small IV.

Mia watched cartoons.

“You went splash,” she told him.

“I did.”

“Big splash.”

“Very big.”

She smiled.

Then asked, “Auntie bad?”

Daniel’s heart twisted.

Children asked questions adults preferred to complicate.

He chose simple truth.

“Aunt Claire made a very bad choice.”

“Does she love me?”

Daniel paused.

“Yes.”

“Then why bad?”

He looked at his daughter.

Because love did not prevent selfishness.

Because jealousy could live beside affection.

Because families hurt one another while still using the word love.

He said, “Sometimes people love someone and still do something wrong. Loving someone doesn’t make the wrong thing okay.”

Mia considered this.

Then returned to her cartoon.

Daniel wished adults could understand as easily.

Claire came to the hospital but did not enter.

She waited downstairs.

Daniel found her sitting alone.

“How is she?”

“She’ll recover.”

Claire cried quietly.

“Can I see her?”

“No.”

Claire nodded.

“Okay.”

Daniel sat across from her.

“I don’t know when that changes.”

“I understand.”

“It may never.”

Her face tightened.

“I understand that too.”

He believed she finally did.

The next morning federal agents executed search warrants at Victor Hale’s office and Hawthorne’s regional headquarters.

Elaine Mercer formally cooperated.

Robert surrendered his records.

Claire turned over recordings.

The case widened.

Victor disappeared.

His attorney claimed not to know where he was.

Daniel feared flight.

Authorities froze several accounts.

Then Rebecca received news.

Victor had not fled the country.

He was in the hospital.

A car had struck him while he crossed a parking garage.

Daniel frowned.

“Accident?”

“Police aren’t sure.”

“Was anyone else involved?”

“A dark SUV left before security arrived.”

Marcus Vale owned three dark SUVs through corporate leases.

Too obvious.

Maybe intentionally.

Daniel said, “Do not let Claire go anywhere alone.”

Rebecca agreed.

The conspiracy was fracturing.

People who had worked together were becoming threats to one another.

Jonah uncovered Victor’s private accounting archive from seized records.

It contained coded names.

Payments.

Internal strategy memos.

And a document titled:

Succession Risk Matrix.

Daniel opened it.

Family members were categorized.

Edmund: resistant.

Robert: compromised.

Claire: influenceable.

Daniel: emotionally rigid.

Emily: unpredictable.

Mia: leverage.

Daniel stopped.

Mia had been entered into the matrix two days after her birth.

He stared at the word.

Leverage.

Rebecca whispered, “This was never just business.”

Daniel scrolled.

A later note after Emily’s cancer diagnosis:

If E.W.-spouse dies, Daniel likely withdraws temporarily. Opportunity for Claire elevation.

They had modeled his grief.

Used Emily’s death as corporate opportunity.

Another entry:

Long-term trust structure vulnerable if C.W. positioned as successor protector.

Victor’s plan had existed before Edmund changed the trust.

Daniel realized the forged Schedule C was not improvised.

It was the culmination of years of preparation.

Then he saw a note dated eleven months earlier.

Three days before Edmund died.

E.W. discovered full matrix. Containment required immediately.

Daniel’s pulse hammered.

“What does containment mean?”

Rebecca did not answer.

Edmund had died from advanced heart disease.

Natural causes.

Documented.

No mystery.

But “containment” did not have to mean murder.

It could mean destroying evidence.

Changing documents.

Removing control.

Daniel searched the seized file index.

One document had been deleted but recovered.

Action Items — E.W. Final Week

Remove original Schedule C.

Retrieve private memorandum.

Secure ledger.

Identify camera/storage copies.

Prevent disclosure to Daniel.

Daniel stared at item four.

Camera.

“What camera?”

Rebecca frowned.

“Not yours. Yours didn’t exist yet.”

Edmund had apparently recorded something before he died.

And Victor believed the recording still existed.

Daniel thought of his father’s office.

The missing envelope.

The hidden ledger.

The prototype lab.

Edmund had left evidence in layers.

Maybe one remained.

At the bottom of the recovered file was a location code.

WH-LIB-3.

Whitmore House.

Library.

Three.

Daniel looked toward the hospital window.

The library where Mia had been sent to the pool.

The room where the microphone had been hidden.

Perhaps the conspiracy had been watching that room because Edmund had hidden something there.

May you like

Daniel called the security team.

“Do not touch anything in the library until I arrive.”
