Chapter 16 - Five FramesThere were five photographs.

Not video.
Five still frames taken in rapid succession while Tasha photographed a flower arrangement across the pool.
In the first, Ava stood before Nia holding the pale box.
In the second, Nia's arm was extended.
Her palm was against Ava.
In the third, Ava was falling backward.
In the fourth, Ava had entered the water.
In the fifth, Nia's head was tilted back.
Her mouth was open.
Laughing.
Darius viewed them once.
Then he stopped.
"I don't need to see them again."
Ortiz nodded.
The photographs were not perfect.
They were distant.
A parasol partially obscured Nia's lower body.
But the sequence matched Emily's account.
It matched Ava's.
It matched the camera shutdown.
The searches.
The trust.
The debt.
The handwritten timeline.
Darius asked, "Is it enough now?"
Ortiz answered, "Enough for an arrest warrant."
Nia Carter was arrested that evening.
News vans appeared outside the mansion before midnight.
Darius closed every curtain.
Ava slept upstairs.
She did not understand what an arrest meant.
Darius planned to keep it that way as long as possible.
Nia was charged initially with felony child endangerment and assault-related offenses, along with separate financial charges under investigation. Prosecutors left open the possibility of more serious charges depending on evidence of intent.
Darius did not celebrate.
Emily found him standing in the dark kitchen.
"They arrested her."
"I know."
"I thought I'd feel something."
"You do."
"What?"
"Everything."
He looked at her.
"That's the problem."
The next morning Nia appeared before a judge.
Her attorney argued the evidence was circumstantial and that Darius was using wealth and influence to destroy her.
The prosecutor described the recovered photographs.
Bail was set high but not impossible.
Nia posted it through funds provided by a relative.
Strict conditions prohibited contact with Ava and restricted contact with Darius to attorneys.
Darius expected relief.
Instead, he felt watched.
Nia had lived in his house.
Known every routine.
Every weakness.
Every door.
Grace told him the criminal case could take months.
The divorce might take longer.
The financial investigation longer still.
"You need to think about Ava's life, not Nia's case," Grace said.
Darius nodded.
He started making changes.
Not dramatic ones.
He replaced the security system.
Changed account credentials.
Removed Nia's access.
Installed child-safe locks.
But he also made changes nobody else could see.
When Ava refused to bathe alone, he sat outside the door.
When she screamed the first time water splashed over her face, he did not tell her she was safe.
He asked what she needed.
When she said "Rex," he brought Rex into the bathroom.
The dog lay on the bathmat until she finished.
Helen Ward returned for a follow-up welfare assessment.
She observed Darius with Ava.
Then she said, "You're calmer."
"I'm terrified."
"Those aren't opposites."
Darius almost smiled.
Helen continued.
"You reacted badly at the pool."
"I know."
"But what matters now is whether you understand why."
"I wanted someone to blame faster than I wanted the truth."
Helen nodded.
"Remember that."
Before leaving, she crouched beside Ava.
"Who keeps you safe?"
Ava looked around.
"Daddy."
Then:
"Emily."
Then:
"Rex."
Helen smiled.
"Anyone else?"
Ava thought very seriously.
"Malik."
Malik, standing near the doorway, cleared his throat and looked away.
Darius noticed Nia's name was absent.
That night he opened Ava's gift box again.
The paper inside was dry now.
AVA + DADDY + NIA = FAMILY.
Darius could not bring himself to throw it away.
It was not evidence of Nia's love.
It was evidence of Ava's.
And he decided her love should never be treated as something shameful just because someone had betrayed it.
He placed the drawing in a drawer.
Then his phone rang.
Grace.
"Darius, we found the person who created the fake Rex bite report."
"Caleb?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Grace paused.
"One of your own employees."
Darius closed his eyes.
"Who?"
"Victor Shaw."
May you like
The name pulled the past back into the room.
And suddenly Nia's conspiracy was no longer confined to his marriage.
