Chapter 14 - The Person Outside the GateSecurity footage from the front drive showed a dark sedan passing the mansion twice.

The license plate was obscured.
No face was visible.
But the note contained one useful detail.
Lavender fibers.
The same kind of ribbon Nia used on nearly every gift she gave.
That meant nothing by itself.
It meant more to Darius.
Nia had decorated Ava's birthday gifts with lavender ribbon since marrying him.
Ava associated the color with her.
Whoever wrote the note knew that.
Detective Ortiz requested records from Nia's phone provider.
Nia, meanwhile, denied everything through her lawyer.
She had moved into a luxury hotel and claimed she feared Darius.
Her attorney described the pool incident as "a tragic misunderstanding weaponized during a marital dispute."
Darius refused to respond publicly.
That surprised Nia.
She had expected him to rage.
Instead, he let Grace speak.
"We are cooperating fully with investigators."
Nothing more.
Nia called him privately.
He almost ignored it.
Grace advised him to answer only with her present.
So Darius placed the call on speaker in Grace's office.
Nia's voice came softly.
"Darius."
"What do you want?"
"To know if Ava's okay."
"Don't."
"I'm her stepmother."
"You pushed her into a pool."
"According to Emily."
"According to Ava."
Silence.
Then Nia sighed.
"You're destroying your family."
"No. I'm finding out what happened to it."
"Emily has always wanted this."
Grace wrote a note and slid it toward Darius.
Do not argue facts. Let her talk.
Darius said nothing.
Nia continued.
"You think that nurse is loyal? Ask her why Leah changed her will."
Darius looked at Grace.
Grace's expression tightened.
"What are you talking about?" he asked.
"Ask Emily."
"Nia."
"Ask her why Leah made that trust so difficult to touch."
The line disconnected.
Darius looked at Grace.
"What did Leah change?"
Grace was silent too long.
"Grace."
The attorney folded her hands.
"Six weeks before Leah died, she amended several trust provisions."
"Why?"
"Because she became concerned someone might pressure you after her death."
"Someone?"
"Not Nia. Nia wasn't in your lives."
"Then who?"
Grace looked uncomfortable.
"Your former business partner, Victor Shaw."
Darius stared.
Victor had been his closest friend.
After Leah died, Victor helped run Carter Development while Darius recovered.
Two years later, Darius bought him out after a bitter dispute.
"What does Victor have to do with Ava?"
"Leah believed he was trying to convince you to pledge family assets as collateral for company debt."
"He was."
"She feared Ava's assets would eventually be pulled into it."
Darius stood.
"So she protected the trust from me."
"From pressure on you."
"Same thing."
"No."
"It feels the same."
Grace continued.
"Leah loved you. She also understood you could be impulsive."
Darius laughed without humor.
"Apparently everyone understood that except me."
That evening he confronted Emily.
"Nia told me you know why Leah changed the trust."
Emily nodded.
"You knew?"
"Leah told me she was worried about Victor."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because she asked me not to."
"She's dead."
"And her instruction didn't become meaningless when she died."
Darius turned away.
Another person had kept something from him.
Another decision made for his own good.
Then Emily said, "There is something else."
He faced her.
"Leah wasn't only afraid Victor would pressure you."
"What else?"
"She was afraid grief would."
Darius went still.
Emily continued.
"She knew you. She knew if anything happened to her, you would try to fix pain with action."
He looked toward the pool.
Like condemning Rex.
Like trusting Nia because she made decisions when he could not.
Darius whispered, "She built the trust around my worst habit."
"No."
Emily shook her head.
"She built it around knowing you might someday learn to overcome it."
His phone rang.
Ortiz.
The sedan outside the mansion had been identified through traffic cameras several blocks away.
