Chapter 15 - Caleb's FearCaleb did not disappear for long.

His attorney convinced him running would make everything worse.

He surrendered the next afternoon.

The truth he offered was uglier than Darius expected and smaller than a grand conspiracy.

Caleb had not agreed to murder anyone.

He had agreed to fraud.

That mattered legally.

It mattered less emotionally.

Nia met Caleb years before Darius. They invested in luxury short-term rentals during a market boom and borrowed aggressively.

When several projects collapsed, the debt remained.

Nia hid it when she began dating Darius.

Caleb helped.

After the marriage, Nia began siphoning money from household accounts.

At first, tens of thousands.

Then hundreds.

When that failed to solve the problem, she tried obtaining larger loans using Darius's credentials.

Caleb created Sable Ridge invoices to disguise transfers.

"What did 'fix the contingency' mean?" Ortiz asked him.

Caleb sat beside his lawyer.

"The trust."

"You knew about Ava's trust?"

"Nia told me."

"What did she tell you?"

"That if something happened to Ava, the restrictions disappeared."

Darius listened from another room after Ortiz obtained permission for him to hear a portion of the recorded interview later.

Caleb continued.

"I told her she was insane."

"You also wrote, 'Fix the contingency.'"

"I meant legally."

"How?"

"She kept saying Darius would never move the assets voluntarily while the trust was active."

Ortiz leaned forward.

"Did you know she intended to harm Ava?"

"No."

"Did you pay the security contractor?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Nia said she wanted administrator access without Darius getting alerts."

"For what purpose?"

"She said she suspected employees were spying on her."

"Did you believe her?"

Caleb looked down.

"No."

"But you paid anyway."

"Yes."

Ortiz placed a photograph of Ava on the table.

Three years old.

Strawberry-blonde hair.

Small hands.

Caleb looked away.

"You helped her disable safeguards around this child."

His lawyer objected to the characterization.

Ortiz ignored him.

"Did you deliver the note to the mansion?"

Caleb shook his head immediately.

"No."

"The vehicle was registered to your company."

"I lent it to Nia."

"When?"

"Two days ago."

Darius felt cold.

Nia herself had been near the mansion.

Waiting.

Watching.

The note had not been about abducting Ava.

Nia later admitted through evidence, not confession, that she wanted Ava to come toward the gate so security footage would show the child wandering unsupervised.

Another piece for her claim that Darius was an unfit father.

She was still manufacturing a story.

But the plan failed because Malik saw Ava.

And because Rex barked.

Again.

By evening, law enforcement seized Nia's hotel room under warrant.

They found no weapon.

No elaborate escape plan.

They found paperwork.

Debt ledgers.

Copies of Darius's financial statements.

The unsigned estate amendment.

A printed copy of Leah's trust.

And a handwritten timeline.

2:00 — guests outside.

2:05 — camera.

2:10 — D inside.

2:15 — gift.

2:20 — problem solved.

Darius read a photograph of the note later.

His hands shook.

"Problem solved."

Grace stood beside him.

"That is strong evidence."

"What problem?"

"We know what prosecutors will argue."

"My daughter."

Grace said nothing.

Darius turned away.

For months Nia had smiled at Ava.

Bought her dresses.

Allowed Ava to call her Mommy.

And privately reduced her to a problem on a handwritten schedule.

Darius walked upstairs.

Ava was sleeping.

Rex lay outside the door.

Darius sat on the floor beside him.

"You ruined her timing," he whispered.

Rex opened one eye.

Darius touched the dog's head.

"You stubborn son of a bitch."

Rex thumped his tail once.

Darius laughed quietly despite himself.

Then he began to cry.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

He simply sat beside the animal he had almost ordered killed and let grief finally become something other than anger.

Downstairs, Grace's phone rang.

It was Ortiz.

Tasha Brooks's deleted photographs had been recovered from cloud backup.

And there was more than one.
