Chapter 17 - The Second Signature

The easement was notarized.

That made it worse.

Daniel’s signature appeared above a notary stamp dated eight months earlier.

He had been in Chicago that day.

His calendar proved it.

The notary was a junior employee at Mercer Development.

When Marcus interviewed her with counsel present, she cried.

Ethan had brought the document already signed.

He told her Daniel had executed it during a video call and needed emergency notarization.

She knew that was improper.

She did it anyway.

Ethan had been her boss.

Daniel listened from another room.

The pattern was becoming clear.

Ethan rarely forced people.

He made wrongdoing feel temporary.

Administrative.

Necessary.

A favor.

A family matter.

Then everyone became invested in protecting the previous compromise.

Claire had entered the same system.

Then used it against a child.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s financial crimes unit was contacted by outside counsel after the board’s audit committee received enough evidence.

Daniel did not control what happened next.

That mattered to him.

He did not want vengeance disguised as justice.

He wanted the truth examined by people with no Mercer name to protect.

Claire moved out of Mercer House.

Her attorney arranged retrieval of personal belongings.

Daniel was not present.

Noah was.

From Laura’s house, he watched through a video call as movers carried boxes.

“Her purple chair,” Noah said.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Daniel smiled slightly.

“You didn’t like it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“It looked angry.”

Daniel laughed for the first time in days.

Noah laughed too.

Later Daniel returned to the mansion.

Claire’s absence changed the sound of it.

Large houses amplified emptiness.

He walked into their bedroom.

Her side of the closet was bare.

On the dresser sat one item she had left.

Their wedding photograph.

Daniel stared at it.

He remembered the day.

Noah had carried the rings.

Claire had knelt before him and said:

“I’m not here to replace your mom. I’m here to love you too.”

Daniel had believed her.

Perhaps she had believed herself.

That question would haunt him for a long time.

He turned the photograph facedown.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

“Daniel Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“This is Detective Angela Reyes with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.”

Daniel sat.

She explained that investigators were reviewing the financial evidence.

Then:

“We also received a referral concerning Noah.”

“From whom?”

“I can’t discuss the source.”

Daniel suspected Dr. Shah had fulfilled a reporting obligation.

Good.

“What happens?”

“We’ll coordinate with the appropriate child welfare authorities and avoid repeated interviews where possible.”

Daniel appreciated that immediately.

“Noah already told his doctor.”

“We’ll request records lawfully.”

“Will he have to talk to police?”

“Possibly, but we’ll use trained child interviewers.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Okay.”

Detective Reyes continued.

“There’s another reason I called.”

“What?”

“Your wife’s attorney contacted us.”

Daniel froze.

“Why?”

“Mrs. Mercer is offering information about Ethan Mercer.”

Daniel felt no surprise.

Only exhaustion.

“What does she want?”

“I can’t negotiate through you.”

“I’m not asking legally.”

A pause.

“She appears to believe Ethan will blame the financial activity on her.”

“He will.”

“We agree that is possible.”

“What information does she have?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You called me to say my wife might cooperate against my brother.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because some of the information apparently concerns your late wife.”

Daniel stopped.

“What about Rachel?”

“She claims Ethan retained documents Rachel never knew he copied.”

“What documents?”

“We don’t have them yet.”

Daniel stood.

Detective Reyes added:

“Mr. Mercer, Claire says those documents explain why Ethan spent six years trying to weaken Noah’s trust.”

Daniel stared at Rachel’s photograph across the bedroom.

The trust had never merely been about money.

May you like

It was the last legal decision Rachel made.

And Ethan had been afraid of it ever since.
