Chapter 12 - Claire’s First Truth

Daniel agreed to meet Claire in Marcus Lee’s office.

Not at home.

Not alone.

Claire arrived without makeup.

She looked exhausted.

Marcus remained in the adjoining conference room.

Daniel sat across from his wife.

Neither spoke for almost a minute.

Then Claire said:

“I never planned to hurt Noah.”

Daniel felt something hot rise inside him.

“You locked him in a room.”

“I know.”

“You blamed him for Rachel’s death.”

“I said something unforgivable.”

“You said it more than once.”

Claire looked down.

“I was angry.”

“At a six-year-old.”

“At you.”

Daniel stared.

“So you punished him.”

“I said I’m not defending it.”

“You’re explaining it.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t need your explanation.”

“You need the rest.”

Daniel said nothing.

Claire took a breath.

“I knew Ethan before I met you.”

“I know.”

Her eyes lifted.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“I worked for Vale Street.”

“I know.”

Claire swallowed.

“Ethan’s company owed them money.”

“His shell company.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know his guarantee used my forged signature?”

“No.”

Daniel watched her.

“I didn’t,” she repeated. “Not then.”

“When did you learn?”

“After we married.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“And you stayed silent.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because by then I was involved.”

“How involved?”

Claire looked toward the window.

“Ethan paid me.”

“How much?”

“Initially? One hundred and eighty thousand.”

“For what?”

“Consulting.”

“Don’t insult me.”

She flinched.

“To help convince you the restructuring was necessary.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Your husband.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Eighteen months.”

“And Bellweather?”

Her silence confirmed it.

“Four point eight million if I signed?”

Claire nodded.

Daniel leaned back.

For several seconds he could not speak.

“Did you marry me for this?”

“No.”

He almost shouted.

Claire continued quickly.

“When Ethan introduced us, yes, he hoped I could influence you. I knew that.”

Daniel stared.

“But I fell in love with you.”

“Stop.”

“I did.”

“Do not ask me to carry that.”

“I’m not.”

“You entered my life because my brother wanted access to me.”

“Yes.”

“You hid your history.”

“Yes.”

“You took his money.”

“Yes.”

“You helped forge documents?”

“No.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Sarah’s signature.”

“I did not forge it.”

“Who did?”

Claire’s eyes shifted.

“Ethan.”

“Did you see him?”

“I saw the file after.”

“Why keep a copy?”

“Insurance.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Against your partner.”

“Against everyone.”

“And the papers in Rachel’s piano bench?”

“I started keeping evidence after Ethan threatened me.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“What threat?”

Claire hesitated.

“He said if the restructuring failed, he would tell you I had been involved from the beginning.”

“You were.”

“Yes.”

“So the threat was the truth.”

Claire’s face tightened.

Daniel saw something he had rarely seen in her.

Shame without performance.

Then he remembered Noah.

It did not matter enough.

“Why Noah?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“He heard us.”

“What?”

“Ethan and me. In the library.”

“When?”

“Last spring.”

“What did he hear?”

“Rachel’s name. The trust. Money.”

“So you locked him in his room.”

“At first for an hour.”

“At first.”

Claire looked down.

“He kept asking questions.”

“He is six.”

“I know.”

“No. You know his age. That isn’t the same thing.”

Claire wiped her eyes.

Daniel felt no urge to comfort her.

She whispered:

“Ethan told me Noah couldn’t be allowed to make you curious.”

Daniel went still.

“Explain.”

“Rachel was always your blind spot. You avoided her name because it hurt. Ethan said if Noah started repeating things about Rachel and money, you might finally look.”

Daniel thought of the cemetery.

Claire says Mom makes you weak.

Claire continued.

“I told Noah terrible things.”

“Why tell him he caused Rachel’s death?”

“Because I wanted him to stop asking about her.”

Daniel stood.

Claire looked up.

“I know what that sounds like.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice shook.

“You know what it is.”

He walked toward the door.

“Daniel, wait.”

He turned.

Claire’s expression changed.

Fear.

“Ethan knows you found Rachel’s backup.”

Daniel stopped.

“How?”

“I told him the storage unit existed years ago.”

“You knew?”

“I knew Rachel kept one. I didn’t know where.”

“When did you tell him?”

“After we got married.”

Daniel stared.

Claire lowered her voice.

“He’s going to destroy whatever he can before you use it.”

Daniel opened the door.

Marcus was already standing.

Daniel said:

“Call the forensic team.”

Marcus nodded.

Claire whispered behind them:

“You’re too late.”

Daniel turned.

“What did he do?”

May you like

Claire’s face had gone pale.

“He has access to the company archive.”
