Chapter 11 - The Backup

The storage facility was climate-controlled and anonymous.
Daniel had paid the bill automatically for six years.
Unit 418 contained Rachel’s professional life.
Eight boxes.
Two filing cabinets.
A leather briefcase.
Three old laptops.
Daniel stood inside with Marcus Lee.
“You sure?” Marcus asked.
“No.”
Daniel picked up the first laptop.
“But we’re doing it.”
Rachel had been meticulous.
Her passwords were not written down, but Daniel knew one recovery phrase from their old shared estate documents.
The third laptop opened.
Folders appeared.
Most were mundane.
Contracts.
Memos.
Property files.
Then Marcus found a directory labeled:
MDG — INTERNAL REVIEW.
Encrypted.
It took their forensic technician three hours to make a lawful working copy and begin recovery using credentials from Rachel’s archived account.
What emerged was far larger than the sealed envelope.
Rachel had investigated Ethan for nearly four months.
Vendor invoices.
Wire instructions.
Meeting notes.
She had identified not three suspicious companies but nine.
Estimated loss:
$2.84 million.
Daniel stared at the number.
Ethan had not made one mistake.
He had run a system.
Rachel’s notes showed she intended to present the findings to the audit committee.
Then, eleven days before Noah’s birth, someone accessed her company account after midnight and deleted a draft report.
The access originated from Margaret’s home network.
Daniel felt nauseated.
His mother.
Marcus cautioned him.
“Network location is not proof of user identity.”
“Ethan stayed there sometimes.”
“Exactly.”
They continued.
One document contained Rachel’s personal notes after a confrontation.
Ethan says he can fix everything if I give him until December. Says Daniel will side with family. I told him Daniel will side with the truth. Ethan laughed.
Daniel looked away.
Rachel had trusted him more than he had deserved.
Another note:
Margaret asked me to stop. She says exposing Ethan will destroy Daniel. She does not understand that hiding this will destroy him later.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Later had arrived.
Marcus opened a folder created two days before Rachel went into labor.
Inside was a scanned letter from a bank.
A loan had been issued to a shell company controlled by Ethan.
Collateral included a personal guarantee bearing Daniel’s electronic signature.
Daniel had never signed it.
“Forgery?” Marcus asked.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“How sure?”
“I was in Tokyo on that date.”
Marcus sat back.
“Then this becomes more than corporate misconduct.”
The amount was $6 million.
The loan had later been repaid through the sale of a company property at a suspiciously low price to an investment group.
Rachel had flagged the buyer.
Daniel recognized the name.
Vale Street Partners.
He searched his memory.
Then it hit him.
Claire had worked there.
Before meeting Daniel.
Before consulting for Ethan.
Before becoming Mrs. Mercer.
Marcus pulled corporate history.
Claire Dawson had been employed by Vale Street Partners from 2018 to 2022.
She had participated in acquisitions.
Including the purchase of the Mercer property that helped repay Ethan’s unauthorized loan.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Claire had not merely known Ethan before meeting him.
She had been connected to the old scheme Rachel discovered.
Three years before Daniel first shook her hand.
Marcus spoke carefully.
“That doesn’t prove she knew the transaction was fraudulent.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“But it proves my marriage began with another lie.”
His phone rang.
Claire.
He ignored it.
She called again.
Then a message arrived.
I know you found the papers. We need to talk before Ethan destroys both of us.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Claire was no longer protecting Ethan.
May you like
Which meant the alliance had cracked.
And people became most dangerous when they believed the other conspirator might speak first.
