Chapter 2 - The Hospital QuestionsThe pediatric emergency department was quiet for a Wednesday evening.

Lucy sat on Ethan's lap wrapped in a hospital blanket while a nurse gently cleaned the dried orange juice from her hair.
"What happened to your pajamas?" the nurse asked conversationally.
Lucy looked at Ethan.
He did not answer for her.
"My mom poured juice."
The nurse paused only long enough to make a note.
"Okay."
Lucy leaned against Ethan.
The physician who examined her was Dr. Amelia Ross, a calm woman in her forties who introduced every movement before touching Lucy.
"I want to look at where your back hurts. Is that okay?"
Lucy nodded.
Ethan stood near her head.
The examination was careful and non-graphic.
Dr. Ross documented several bruises and superficial scratches at different stages of healing.
She did not tell Ethan what caused them.
She told him what she could say.
"These need explanation."
"Claire says Lucy fell against the stairs."
"One incident?"
"That's what she implied."
Dr. Ross glanced at the notes.
"I can't determine the entire history from appearance alone."
Ethan swallowed.
"But?"
"But given Lucy's age, her disclosure, her pain, and the fact that some marks appear older than others, we are required to involve our child-protection team."
He nodded.
"I understand."
He did not.
Not emotionally.
Only logically.
An hour later, social worker Dana Mills entered.
She spoke to Ethan first.
"When did you last see Lucy before today?"
"Sunday morning."
"Any marks then?"
"Not that I saw."
"Does Claire normally handle childcare when you travel?"
"Mostly."
"Daycare?"
"Three mornings a week."
Dana looked at her tablet.
"Lucy says she hasn't gone lately."
Ethan turned toward his daughter.
"She hasn't?"
Lucy was playing with a wooden puzzle.
"Mom says school makes noise."
Ethan's brow furrowed.
Claire had told him Lucy's daycare had closed temporarily because several teachers were sick.
He had never checked.
Dana continued.
"Does Lucy have another regular caregiver?"
"Claire's cousin Natalie helps sometimes."
"Last name?"
"Reed."
Dana wrote it down.
"Any family nearby?"
"My sister Rachel lives twenty minutes away. Claire's mother is about an hour away."
"Has Lucy ever made statements like this before?"
"No."
He hesitated.
"At least not clearly."
Dana noticed.
"What does clearly mean?"
Ethan thought of small things.
Lucy crying when he announced trips.
Lucy asking whether Claire would be home before agreeing to leave her bedroom.
Lucy once whispering, Mom gets mad when the house gets loud.
He had treated all of it as toddler behavior.
"I don't know anymore."
Dana's voice softened.
"You don't have to reconstruct three years tonight."
Claire arrived forty minutes later.
Her hair had been restyled.
Her burgundy dress was gone.
She wore jeans and a gray sweater.
Ethan noticed that immediately.
"What did you tell them?" she demanded.
Dana stepped between them verbally before Ethan could answer.
"Mrs. Bennett, I'm Dana Mills. I'll speak with you separately."
Claire pointed toward Lucy.
"I'm her mother."
"Yes."
"I should be with her."
"Dr. Ross is still completing her evaluation."
Claire looked at Ethan.
"You had no right to keep me from her."
"I didn't."
"You've turned this into exactly what I warned you about."
Dana led Claire away.
Lucy watched her mother disappear through the door.
Her small hand found Ethan's.
"Do I have to go home?"
The question nearly broke him.
"We'll figure out where we're sleeping tonight."
"Not quiet room."
"No."
She leaned against him.
Later, Dana returned with another professional.
They explained that Claire had given a different account.
She said Lucy had fallen from a small indoor climbing structure two days earlier.
Not stairs.
She also said the pitcher incident had been an accident caused by Lucy grabbing the container.
Ethan stared at Dana.
"That's not what I saw."
"I understand."
"She was holding it."
"We're documenting both accounts."
Claire had also made another allegation.
According to Dana, she said Ethan had recently become controlling and unpredictable because of work stress.
"She said what?"
Dana stayed neutral.
"I'm telling you because it may come up again."
"Has she ever reported that before?"
"Not to us."
Lucy was discharged late that night.
The immediate plan was for her to stay with Ethan away from Claire while the investigation continued.
Rachel, Ethan's older sister, opened her guest room to them.
As Ethan gathered Lucy's hospital paperwork, Dr. Ross handed him a sealed packet.
"Follow-up instructions."
"Thank you."
She hesitated.
"Mr. Bennett?"
"Yes?"
"Children this young often tell adults things indirectly."
Ethan looked at Lucy.
"I know that now."
At Rachel's house, Lucy fell asleep almost immediately.
Ethan did not.
At 2:13 a.m., his phone buzzed.
A notification from their home-security application.
DEVICE OFFLINE: UPSTAIRS HALLWAY CAMERA
Then another.
DEVICE OFFLINE: OFFICE CAMERA
Then:
DEVICE REMOVED FROM ACCOUNT
Ethan sat upright.
Claire was deleting cameras.
He opened the cloud-storage section.
Almost every recording from the previous month was gone.
Almost.
One clip remained because it had already been automatically saved under "motion event."
Timestamp:
Tuesday, 11:42 p.m.
The image showed the upstairs hallway.
Lucy was asleep on the floor outside Claire's office.
And Claire was dragging something heavy toward the camera.
A wooden bench.
Lucy stirred.
Claire looked directly toward the device.
May you like
Then reached up.
The video ended.
