Chapter 15 - The ScriptsThe documents were titled innocently.

LUCY CLIPS
Most contained promotional phrases.
"I love helping Mommy cook!"
"Home is my favorite place!"
"My mommy makes everything pretty!"
Then the tone changed.
A separate subfolder was named:
PERSONAL DOCUMENTATION
Script 1:
Daddy is gone a lot.
Script 2:
Daddy gets mad when Mommy spends money.
Script 3:
Daddy makes Mommy cry.
Script 4:
I want to stay with Mommy.
None were recordings.
Investigators found no evidence Lucy had successfully been filmed saying most of them.
But Claire had written prompts.
Beside one line she added:
Do not lead too obviously. Ask as choice question.
Ethan felt sick.
Paige said, "Don't jump beyond what this proves."
"It proves she intended to coach a three-year-old."
"It strongly supports that."
Another document contained shooting notes.
Need natural lighting. No ring light. Should feel spontaneous.
Claire had planned authenticity.
Not truth.
Ethan remembered Lucy's line:
Mom says the camera can't see the quiet place.
There were two kinds of cameras in Claire's world.
The ones used to create the family.
And the ones she disabled to hide it.
Natalie confirmed Claire had discussed "capturing honest moments" for potential custody documentation.
"I told her it was insane."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Natalie did not defend herself.
"I was scared."
Ethan was tired of fear explaining adult silence.
But then he looked at Natalie.
Her business was under investigation.
Her reputation was damaged.
She had lost most of her income.
Fear had consequences too.
"You should've told me."
"I know."
"What made you finally stop?"
Natalie looked at him.
"Lucy stopped crying when Claire put her in the closet."
Ethan froze.
"What?"
"She just walked in."
Natalie began crying.
"That scared me more than when she screamed."
Ethan understood.
Resistance had disappeared.
Lucy had learned the outcome was inevitable.
Natalie continued.
"That night I copied the files."
"Why not call authorities?"
"I kept telling myself I'd do it the next morning."
"How many mornings?"
"Too many."
Ethan looked away.
Again, there were no clean adults in this story.
Only different levels of responsibility.
The financial case moved simultaneously.
Linda returned $24,000.
Natalie agreed to return $8,600 remaining from fabricated invoice payments.
Approximately $15,000 in Kindred Nest accounts was frozen pending resolution.
That still left a significant shortfall.
Claire proposed selling company equipment.
The home-retail sponsorship formally terminated negotiations.
Kindred Nest lost its largest potential future contract.
Claire blamed no one publicly.
That surprised Ethan.
Her final public post read:
Kindred Nest will pause operations indefinitely. My priority is addressing serious private matters involving my family and business.
No perfect-mother speech.
No attack on Ethan.
Maybe Marianne had written it.
Maybe Claire had.
Ethan did not care.
Lucy began returning to preschool.
On her first day, Ethan remained parked outside for twenty minutes.
He hated leaving.
Dr. Lee had warned him not to turn his guilt into Lucy's new cage.
Protection could become control too.
So he drove away.
At pickup, Lucy ran toward him holding a paper crown.
"Dad!"
The word no longer sounded entirely like an emergency.
He crouched.
"Hey."
She slammed into him laughing.
"What did you do today?"
"Paint!"
"What color?"
"Orange."
Ethan paused.
Lucy didn't.
"Orange and purple and green."
She showed him.
He smiled.
"That's a lot of paint."
"I spilled."
His heart tightened.
"What happened?"
"Teacher wiped it."
"Anything else?"
Lucy shrugged.
"No."
The ordinary answer nearly made him cry.
Later, Paige asked whether he wanted to seek an immediate final custody trial.
"No."
She raised an eyebrow.
"I want the investigation finished."
"That could take months."
"I know."
"Claire could improve during that time."
"I hope she does."
Paige studied him.
"That may affect the eventual structure."
"I know."
"You're not trying to erase her."
"No."
He looked at the daycare painting.
"I want Lucy to have whatever relationship is actually safe. Not whatever relationship makes me feel vindicated."
Paige nodded.
"Good."
Then she handed him another report.
Kindred Nest's cloud storage had one final archived file.
A private voice memo recorded by Claire on the night before Ethan's trip.
The night before Lucy's newest bruises appeared.
Claire's voice sounded exhausted.
"I can't do another week like this. She won't stay quiet. Ethan gets to leave and be the good parent because he's never here for the bad parts."
There was a long pause.
Then Claire whispered:
"Tomorrow I'm making her understand."
May you like
Ethan stopped the audio.
He didn't need to hear more.
