Chapter 9 - The Call at 2:13 A.M.Grant called Vanessa at 2:13 the next morning.

Her attorney answered first.

Then Officer Miller.

The call came through an encrypted application, but Grant apparently did not know police were monitoring Vanessa’s devices with her consent.

Vanessa sat in Evelyn’s library.

A recorder ran beside her.

Miller held up one finger.

Answer.

Vanessa did.

“Hello?”

Grant’s voice was calm.

“You’ve made a mess.”

Vanessa’s hand shook.

“You locked a child in a room,” he continued.

Her eyes widened.

“You told me to keep her away from the folder.”

“I told you to get the folder.”

“You said if she saw anything—”

“Stop.”

Grant’s tone changed.

Even Miller could hear the control behind it.

“You are not going to rewrite history because you panicked.”

Vanessa looked at Miller.

He motioned for her to keep him talking.

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“The police found the documents.”

A pause.

“All of them?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer mattered.

Grant did not know about the folder Lily had hidden.

Vanessa continued.

“They know about the shell companies.”

Grant sighed.

“I expected that.”

“You expected it?”

“We were always going to close them.”

“We?”

“Do not become moral now, Vanessa.”

Her face hardened.

“You promised me six hundred thousand dollars.”

“And I promised you freedom from the prenup.”

Adam, listening from the adjoining room, closed his eyes.

There it was.

Another secret.

The prenuptial agreement.

Vanessa had not participated only because of debt.

She had feared leaving the marriage with little money.

Grant knew it.

Vanessa said, “You said nobody would get hurt.”

“Nobody was supposed to.”

“Lily was trapped for seven hours.”

“Because you didn’t open the door.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

Grant continued.

“I told you to create a distraction. Not a felony.”

Miller wrote two words on a pad.

WHAT DISTRACTION?

Vanessa swallowed.

“What exactly did you expect me to do?”

Grant laughed softly.

“The same plan we discussed for three weeks.”

“Say it.”

Silence.

Miller’s expression tightened.

Grant had sensed something.

“Why?”

“Because everything is falling apart.”

“Vanessa.”

“Say it!”

Grant’s voice became cold.

“Lily was supposed to be missing long enough for Evelyn to sign the emergency management authorization while everyone was panicking. Then you were supposed to find her.”

Adam covered his mouth.

Evelyn stared straight ahead.

The scheme was worse than any of them had imagined.

Lily’s disappearance had been designed.

Not as kidnapping for ransom.

Not as revenge.

As emotional leverage.

Grant continued.

“You said the girl knew about the room and thought it was a clubhouse. You said she wouldn’t be afraid for an hour.”

Vanessa started crying.

“She was afraid immediately.”

“That’s why plans require discipline.”

Officer Miller’s jaw clenched.

Vanessa whispered, “Where are you?”

Grant ignored the question.

“Does Evelyn know the first filing went through?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“Good?”

“It gives us leverage.”

“There is no us anymore.”

A long pause.

Then Grant said:

“Be careful, Vanessa.”

“Why?”

“Because Adam is listening to you confess to things I never did.”

The call disconnected.

Everyone froze.

Adam entered the library.

“He knew.”

Miller shook his head.

“He suspected.”

Vanessa stood.

“How?”

“Your tone. Questions you normally wouldn’t ask.”

Her attorney sat beside her.

“Doesn’t matter. We got plenty.”

Miller agreed.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Evidence of a planned disappearance.

But one thing bothered him.

Grant had said Lily was supposed to be missing for one hour.

Yet Vanessa had left her for seven.

Grant might be a criminal.

But Vanessa’s worst decision had been hers alone.

Then a message appeared on her phone.

One sentence.

YOU STILL HAVE SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO ME.

Attached was a photograph.

It showed Adam entering the hospital the previous morning.

Taken from across the street.

Grant had been watching them.

May you like

And if he had been close enough to photograph Adam—

he might still be somewhere near the Hale estate.
