Chapter 2 - The Room That Wasn’t on the PlansThe fire department arrived nine minutes later.

To Evelyn, it felt like nine years.

Adam remained against the wall, speaking continuously.

“Lily, sweetheart, Daddy’s right here.”

At first Lily answered.

Then her replies became weaker.

Officer Miller made the decision quickly.

There was an immediate threat to a child’s safety. Waiting for construction records or additional warrants was no longer reasonable.

“Open it.”

A rescue crew removed decorative stone around the area where Ranger had alerted.

Behind it they discovered reinforced framing.

Then insulation.

Then a narrow metal panel.

One firefighter looked at Miller.

“This wasn’t built like a normal landscaping wall.”

“How was it built?”

“Like someone wanted a room behind it.”

Adam heard.

His eyes went directly to Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know.”

The firefighter forced the panel.

Cold air escaped.

Then they saw Lily.

She was curled against the far side of a narrow concrete chamber, wearing purple shorts and a white T-shirt covered with dust.

A plastic water bottle lay beside her.

Empty.

“Daddy?”

Adam pushed forward.

“Let them get her first,” Miller ordered.

Lily began crying.

“I want Daddy.”

Paramedics lifted her out.

Adam fell to his knees and wrapped his arms around her as soon as they allowed him.

Evelyn knelt beside them.

“My baby.”

Vanessa approached.

Lily saw her.

Her entire body stiffened.

Vanessa stopped.

“Lily?”

The little girl buried her face against Adam.

Miller noticed.

So did Evelyn.

Adam did not.

Not yet.

He was kissing Lily’s hair, repeating her name.

At the hospital, doctors found dehydration, bruising on Lily’s hands from pounding against the wall, and mild hypothermia from the chamber’s ventilation system.

No major physical injury.

Adam stayed beside her bed.

Evelyn sat near the window.

Vanessa stood in the hallway because Lily had begun crying every time she entered the room.

Officer Miller waited until a child-interview specialist arrived.

Nobody wanted to contaminate Lily’s memory.

When Lily was calm, the specialist sat with her while Adam remained nearby.

“Do you remember how you got into the room?”

Lily nodded.

“Can you tell me?”

Her eyes moved toward the hallway.

Vanessa’s silhouette was visible through the glass.

“I was playing.”

“Where?”

“By the pool house.”

“What happened?”

Lily twisted the blanket around her fingers.

“I saw Vanessa.”

Adam inhaled sharply.

The interviewer remained calm.

“What was Vanessa doing?”

“She was talking to the man.”

“What man?”

“The man with shiny shoes.”

Adam looked at Miller.

“Grant,” Evelyn whispered.

Grant Holloway.

The Hale family’s financial adviser.

He wore polished black shoes even to backyard meetings.

The interviewer continued.

“What happened after you saw them?”

“Vanessa told me not to touch the blue papers.”

“What blue papers?”

“The folder.”

“Then what?”

Lily’s lower lip trembled.

“She said we were playing a hiding game.”

Adam closed his eyes.

“Where did she tell you to hide?”

Lily pointed vaguely toward the direction of the estate.

“In the little room.”

The interviewer waited.

“And then?”

“She closed it.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Adam rose from his chair.

“No.”

Miller held up a hand.

“Let her finish.”

Lily began crying again.

“I thought she was coming back.”

Adam sat down immediately.

The child specialist ended the questioning.

Outside the room, Adam confronted Vanessa.

“What did she mean?”

Vanessa’s face had gone white.

“She’s six, Adam.”

“She said you put her in there.”

“No. She said I showed her a hiding place.”

“That room was sealed.”

“I didn’t know that.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You recommended the contractor who built that wall.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“You’ve hated me since I married your son.”

“This isn’t about whether I like you.”

“You want it to be.”

Officer Miller intervened.

“Nobody leaves the hospital without speaking to me.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Am I under arrest?”

“Not yet.”

The words seemed to strike harder than an accusation.

Miller continued.

“But I want to know who Grant Holloway is, why he was at the estate today, and what was inside a blue folder that frightened you enough to tell a six-year-old not to touch it.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Then at Adam.

Finally she whispered:

“You need to ask Evelyn what she was supposed to sign tomorrow.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Miller caught it.

“What were you supposed to sign?”

Evelyn answered slowly.

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“Yes, you do.”

May you like

And suddenly Lily’s disappearance was no longer only about a hidden room.

It was about whatever the Hale family had been preparing to put on paper.
