Chapter 16 - Beneath the MansionThe phrase sounded impossible.

Samuel Whitmore had never lived at the Mercer mansion.

He had no reason to hide anything there.

Claire insisted he had.

“My father helped design the original laboratory room beneath the west wing.”

Ethan stared at her.

“There is no laboratory under the house.”

“There was.”

“My family built this mansion before Halcyon.”

“And remodeled it in 2000.”

Ethan looked toward the west wing.

A wine cellar occupied the lower floor now.

Nora arrived with Detective Chen.

Claire repeated the story.

Chen remained skeptical.

“Your father hid evidence inside the home of the people he accused?”

“He told me he'd put the truth where Richard's lawyers would never search.”

“Why would he have access?”

“He supervised environmental testing during renovations.”

Ethan remembered old photographs.

Construction crews.

His father arguing about ventilation.

“Where?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Nora said, “Then we're not tearing down a mansion based on a childhood memory.”

Ethan looked toward the pool.

“What exactly did Samuel say?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“He said, ‘If they bury me, look below the place they pretend is clean.'”

Nora frowned.

“That could mean anything.”

Ethan remembered an old property map.

The original indoor testing room had been converted into the pool equipment vault during renovation.

“Pool house.”

Claire looked at him.

Within an hour investigators obtained access.

No dramatic wall smashing.

No secret tunnel.

Just architectural drawings.

A maintenance corridor.

A section marked SEALED SERVICE VOID.

Workers opened it under police supervision.

Inside was dust.

Old piping.

A rusted metal locker bolted to concrete.

Claire stared.

“My father used one exactly like that.”

Chen documented everything before opening it.

The lock had corroded.

Inside they found waterproof document cases.

Three.

Samuel Whitmore's handwriting covered the labels.

HALCYON ORIGINAL TEST DATA.

CORRESPONDENCE.

SLOANE.

Claire sat down on the concrete floor.

For several seconds she didn't speak.

Then she whispered, “He was telling the truth.”

Ethan looked at her.

“That doesn't make what you did right.”

“I know.”

Chen opened the first case.

The records would require authentication, but initial inspection showed original signatures, laboratory notes and contemporaneous memos.

One memo appeared devastating.

Martin had instructed technicians to rerun tests until reported measurements fell within “acceptable corporate parameters.”

Another contained Richard Mercer's handwritten objection.

MARTIN — WE CANNOT ALTER RAW RESULTS.

That didn't absolve Richard.

Other documents showed he ultimately allowed the altered summary to leave the company.

But it changed the story.

Samuel had been framed.

Martin had initiated the manipulation.

Richard had chosen silence afterward.

Both had failed him differently.

Claire held one photograph.

Her father smiling beside lab technicians.

She began to cry.

Ethan watched without comforting her.

He couldn't.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

Detective Chen stepped away to call prosecutors.

Nora approached Ethan.

“This is enough to destroy Martin's credibility.”

“Not enough to prove what he's doing now.”

“No.”

“Then we keep going.”

A forensic team discovered a fourth package behind the locker.

Newer.

Placed there recently.

The plastic was clean.

Ethan stared.

“Samuel didn't put that there.”

Chen photographed it.

Inside were current financial records.

Martin's debt transactions.

Cedar Vale payments.

And detailed schedules of the Mercers' daily routines.

Lily's school.

Evelyn's appointments.

Ethan's office meetings.

Claire went pale.

“I've never seen these.”

Chen looked at her.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

One page contained handwritten notes.

Increase E.M. exposure after board packet execution.

Reduce C.W. visibility.

Maintain N.M. as fallback blame target.

Noah.

Martin had planned to frame him too.

Claire covered her mouth.

“He was going to blame all of us.”

Ethan felt something colder than anger.

Clarity.

Martin hadn't merely exploited Claire.

He had built a structure in which every Mercer and Claire herself could be sacrificed.

Nora pointed to another line.

Final transition after ceremony.

“What transition?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Ethan remembered the emergency financing authority.

The board.

The debt.

Martin needed Ethan incapacitated.

He needed Claire compromised.

He needed Noah suspected.

He needed the family publicly discredited.

Then Chen's phone rang.

She listened.

Her expression changed.

“When?”

She looked at Ethan.

“Martin just entered Mercer headquarters.”

“He was there yesterday.”

“He left overnight.”

“What is he doing now?”

“He arrived with outside restructuring counsel and representatives from two lenders.”

Nora swore.

Ethan said, “He's triggering the debt provisions.”

Chen nodded.

“And there's more.”

“What?”

“His attorney has just provided the board with a medical declaration claiming you're temporarily unfit to exercise executive authority.”

Ethan laughed.

“From whom?”

May you like

Chen looked at Claire.

“Dr. Kessler.”
