Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Changed Sides“Claire?”

Ethan leaned toward the screen.

No answer.

Martin spread his hands.

“Connection problem.”

Detective Chen was already calling hospital security.

Claire had joined the board meeting from somewhere inside the building.

Officers found her phone in a consultation room.

Claire wasn't there.

For seven terrible minutes Ethan imagined every possibility.

Then she appeared downstairs near the main entrance.

She had simply walked away.

Chen intercepted her before she reached the street.

“You left your phone.”

“I didn't want it anymore.”

“Why?”

“Because Martin can track it.”

Chen's expression changed.

“Come with me.”

Claire looked toward Ethan approaching in a wheelchair Dr. Patel had forced him to use.

Her eyes filled.

“So you know.”

Ethan did not answer.

Claire looked at Chen.

“I'll talk.”

“Without an attorney?”

“Yes.”

“I strongly recommend—”

“I said I'll talk.”

They moved to a private room.

Claire sat opposite Chen.

Ethan was permitted to remain only because Claire agreed.

Nora arrived fifteen minutes later.

Claire looked at her.

“You.”

Nora raised an eyebrow.

“We've met?”

“My father hated you.”

“I never met your father.”

“Richard Mercer hated you.”

“That tracks.”

Claire almost smiled.

Then she looked at Ethan.

“I didn't want Lily hurt.”

Ethan's voice was quiet.

“You gave her something without my knowledge.”

“Yes.”

“So don't start by asking me to forgive your intentions.”

Claire flinched.

“I won't.”

“Good.”

She took a breath.

“My father spent the last years of his life trying to clear his name. He kept copies of Halcyon records. Internal tests. Emails. Draft reports.”

“Where are they?”

“I don't know.”

“You came here seven years ago.”

“You know that too.”

“My mother told me.”

Claire nodded.

“I wanted Richard to confess publicly.”

“He refused to see you.”

“Yes.”

“What happened after that?”

“I spent years trying to find another way.”

“Then you met me.”

Claire looked down.

“That wasn't planned.”

Ethan laughed once.

She winced.

“I swear.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“I met you at the foundation gala because I was there looking for records.”

“So our entire relationship started with a lie.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

Claire continued.

“Then I fell in love with you.”

“Stop.”

“It matters.”

“Not to Lily.”

Claire's eyes filled.

“No.”

She wiped them.

“Martin approached me after he realized who I was.”

“When?”

“Ten months ago.”

“What did he want?”

“He said he had proof my father was framed.”

“And the price?”

“Help him pressure the Mercer family.”

“By poisoning us.”

Claire looked away.

“The original compound was supposed to produce temporary symptoms at extremely low exposure.”

Chen interrupted.

“Do not describe preparation or administration. Tell me who supplied it.”

“Martin's contractor.”

“Kessler?”

“Kessler handled medical monitoring. He didn't know everything.”

“Who altered the concentration?”

“I don't know.”

Claire's voice shook.

“I was told the exposure would stop once Ethan signed a public settlement reopening the Halcyon case and removing Martin from oversight.”

Ethan stared.

“You wanted Martin removed?”

“I thought he was helping me expose your father.”

“Then why remove him?”

“Because he said he was willing to sacrifice himself after the truth came out.”

Nora muttered, “Convenient.”

Claire nodded.

“I was stupid.”

Ethan said, “You were criminal.”

“Yes.”

That answer silenced him.

Claire continued.

“Three weeks ago Lily got much sicker than she was supposed to. I confronted Martin. He said children metabolize differently.”

Ethan's hands curled.

Claire saw.

“I should have gone to police.”

“Yes.”

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid.”

“For yourself.”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Claire looked at him.

“For you.”

Ethan turned away.

He couldn't bear whatever truth was in her face.

Chen asked, “What changed today?”

“Martin told me Ethan had already been exposed at work. He said tomorrow the board would declare Ethan temporarily incapacitated.”

“And then?”

“He would control operations.”

“Where does the wedding fit?”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“It doesn't. Not really.”

Ethan looked at her.

“I moved it because I thought marriage would protect me.”

“From Martin?”

“He has records proving what I did. I thought if I was legally Ethan's wife, Martin wouldn't be able to remove me from the house or isolate me.”

“You thought I'd defend you.”

“Yes.”

“After what you did to Lily.”

Claire lowered her head.

“Yes.”

Ethan stood.

He couldn't remain in the room.

At the door Claire said, “Ethan.”

He stopped.

“My father didn't die because of Halcyon.”

Ethan turned.

Claire wiped her face.

“He died because someone destroyed him after he threatened to release the records.”

“What does that mean?”

“He lost every job. Every consulting contract. His insurance. His professional license.”

“Martin?”

“I thought Richard.”

“And now?”

Claire looked toward Nora.

“Now I know Richard wasn't the one who made those calls.”

Nora had gone completely still.

“How?”

Claire reached into her purse.

Detective Chen moved quickly.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Claire slowly removed a folded document.

She put it on the table.

“Because my father kept one letter.”

Ethan unfolded it.

A typed warning.

Dated 2002.

Withdraw all allegations regarding Mercer Therapeutics or your professional future will be permanently affected.

No signature.

But at the bottom was a handwritten note from Samuel.

M. Sloane delivered this personally.

Ethan looked up.

Claire whispered, “Martin didn't help destroy my father after the cover-up.”

May you like

Her eyes hardened.

“He was the cover-up.”
