Chapter 11 - No More SecretsEmily screamed for Silas.

Within minutes the house was awake.

Federal agents traced what they could.

The call came through multiple exchanges.

Location uncertain.

But Daniel was alive.

Now in immediate danger.

An agent named Rebecca Sloan took control.

She was forty-six, calm, sharp, and the first investigator Emily trusted.

“From now on, nobody improvises.”

Emily almost laughed.

“That includes me?”

“Especially you.”

Emily respected the answer.

Rebecca explained something Daniel had understood too late.

Frank’s leverage changed.

Before, Daniel knew where the ledger was.

After the government received it, that leverage vanished.

But Frank might still keep Daniel alive if he believed Daniel knew about additional gold.

Three missing bars.

Emily remembered.

“Could Dad use that?”

Rebecca nodded.

“If Frank still believes Daniel knows where they are.”

A plan formed.

Create controlled information suggesting the three bars had been hidden separately and only Daniel knew the exact location.

Make Frank believe Daniel remained valuable.

The story was leaked through a channel Deputy Mercer once used.

Then everyone waited.

Two days.

Nothing.

Third day.

Victor Raines surfaced.

He contacted Silas directly.

“Trade.”

Silas recorded the call.

“What?”

“Your son for what belongs to us.”

“What belongs to you?”

“The three bars.”

Silas replied:

“Daniel never had them.”

Victor laughed.

“Then he dies knowing his daughter called him a coward.”

Emily heard the recording later.

The cruelty hit exactly where intended.

But it also revealed something.

Victor knew what Emily had said.

At the post.

He had heard it himself.

Frank probably knew too.

Her misunderstanding had become a weapon against Daniel.

Rebecca proposed giving Victor a fake location.

Silas resisted.

Emily did not.

“You want me involved? Use me.”

“No,” Silas said.

Emily turned.

“No more deciding for me.”

Silence.

Rebecca looked between them.

Then said:

“She’s seventeen.”

Emily glared.

Rebecca continued.

“And she is also the person Victor threatened. That makes her relevant, not expendable.”

Emily appreciated the distinction.

They crafted a message supposedly from Emily:

I found Dad’s note. I know where he put them. I want him back.

Victor responded.

Prove it.

Emily photographed a replica gold bar federal agents provided.

Victor demanded the real one.

The exchange moved slowly.

Each side testing.

Finally Victor gave a meeting location.

Abandoned stockyard.

Midnight.

Silas would bring the “bar.”

Victor would provide proof Daniel lived.

No Emily.

That was the agreement.

Emily stayed in an unmarked vehicle half a mile away with Rebecca.

For once she followed the plan.

Silas entered the stockyard.

Victor appeared.

No Daniel.

Instead Victor carried a Polaroid.

Fresh.

Daniel holding that day’s newspaper.

Alive.

Silas demanded location.

Victor demanded all three bars.

Silas said:

“One now. Two when Daniel walks free.”

Victor almost agreed.

Then headlights appeared unexpectedly.

Not federal vehicles.

Frank.

Victor turned furious.

“You weren’t supposed to come.”

A man stepped from the truck.

Seventy-ish.

Gray hair.

Silver ring.

Frank Carter.

Silas stared at the brother he had mourned for twelve years.

Frank smiled.

“Hello, Silas.”

Every microphone listening captured it.

The dead man had just announced himself.

Frank looked at the fake gold bar.

Then at Silas.

“You always were terrible at lying.”

And from the darkness behind him, two men dragged Daniel Carter into view.

Emily saw her father through binoculars.

Thin.

Limping.

Alive.

She forgot every instruction.

Her hand went to the vehicle door.

Rebecca caught her wrist.

“No.”

“That’s my dad.”

“I know.”

“They have him.”

“I know.”

Emily struggled.

Then Daniel raised his head.

Even at a distance, he seemed to look directly toward the hidden surveillance position.

Impossible.

Then he smiled faintly.

May you like

And Emily realized something.

Her father already knew they were there.
