Chapter 10 - Beneath the Water TroughThe oldest cattle trough on Red Creek Ranch had stood beside the main corral for thirty-six years.

People passed it every day.
Animals drank from it.
Ranch hands repaired it.
Nobody would imagine hiding evidence there.
Daniel had.
Beneath a removable concrete base plate, Emily found a waterproof metal tube.
Inside was the ledger.
Names.
Truck numbers.
Dates.
Gold shipments.
Cash.
Bribes.
Land purchases.
Victor Raines.
Deputy Mercer.
The banker.
Several dead men.
And Frank Carter.
Page after page.
Enough evidence to reopen crimes stretching back to the 1960s.
Emily stared at her father’s handwritten notes alongside entries.
Daniel had spent weeks copying information from the original ledger.
He had never carried the original with him.
He left only a duplicate.
That was why Frank could never find it.
The information went directly to federal investigators.
Within days arrest warrants expanded.
Victor disappeared.
Frank remained missing.
Silas asked the question everyone feared.
“If Daniel gave us the ledger location, why didn’t he escape himself?”
The answer came from the medical supplies found at South Gate Feed Yard.
Daniel had been injured.
One label belonged to medication used after severe leg trauma.
Emily imagined her father trying to escape with an injured leg.
The thought tortured her.
Then authorities traced the medicine to a small clinic.
The nurse remembered the patient.
“Daniel?”
She did not know the name.
But recognized the photograph.
“He came in with two men.”
“When?”
Seven months earlier.
“He could barely walk.”
“What did they say?”
Horse accident.
The patient said almost nothing.
But when one man left the room, he whispered to the nurse:
“Call Red Creek.”
She thought he meant an ambulance service or town.
She did not understand.
The second man returned before she could ask.
The nurse never reported it.
Emily felt anger.
Then stopped.
How could the woman know?
Everyone in the story had missed something because they lacked the whole picture.
Investigators identified one escort.
Victor.
The other remained unknown.
Frank probably avoided public places.
Then the nurse remembered another detail.
The unknown man wore a ring.
Large silver ring with a black stone.
Silas went pale.
Frank wore that ring when he was young.
Family inheritance from their father.
Silas thought it burned in the crash with him.
Now they had another confirmation.
Frank personally controlled Daniel.
Emily’s hatred shifted.
For over a year she had directed it at her father.
Now she wished she could take every thought back.
Then she stopped herself.
No.
Daniel still chose deception.
He still instructed Silas to let them believe he ran.
He did it for protection.
But consequences remained.
Emily could love him and still be angry.
That distinction became important.
Federal agents planned raids on three properties linked to Frank.
Nothing.
Empty.
Someone warned him.
They checked the investigation team.
No obvious leak.
Then Silas remembered something.
Victor had threatened Emily:
If you can’t bring your father back...
He spoke as though Daniel could return.
Maybe the threat at the ranch had not been about forcing Daniel from hiding.
Maybe it was intended to make Silas act.
Frank knew Silas had received messages.
They were watching the family to see where they searched.
Every trip.
Denver.
Mine.
South Gate.
Church.
They had been leading Frank closer to the ledger.
Emily felt sick.
“Then he knows we found it.”
Silas nodded.
“And knows the government has it.”
Frank no longer needed Daniel for the ledger.
Laura whispered:
“Then why keep him alive?”
No one answered.
That night Emily could not sleep.
At 2:13 a.m., the ranch phone rang.
She answered.
A familiar male voice breathed:
“Emily?”
Everything inside her stopped.
“Dad?”
Silence.
Then Daniel Carter said the words she had waited fourteen months to hear.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily began crying.
“Where are you?”
“I don’t have long.”
“Dad, where are you?”
A sound behind him.
Door.
Voice.
Daniel whispered:
“Don’t let them trade me for the ledger.”
Emily gripped the phone.
“We already gave it to the FBI.”
Daniel became completely silent.
Then:
“Oh, God.”
“What?”
“Emily…”
His voice changed.
May you like
“If they know that, they don’t need me anymore.”
The line went dead.
