Chapter 19 - The Man Across the StreetNaomi did not open the door.

She lowered the blinds, called Rachel back, and told her Nolan was outside.
"Is he approaching the house?" Rachel asked.
"Not yet."
"Keep the doors locked. If you feel threatened, call the police."
Naomi looked toward the living room.
Ava was watching a cartoon with her rabbit.
She had not noticed anything.
Naomi wanted to keep it that way.
Then her phone vibrated.
A text from an unknown number.
I need to talk. Not to hurt you. Please.
Naomi stared.
Another message arrived.
It's Nolan. I know you saw me.
She called the police non-emergency number, reported the unwanted visit in the context of the earlier threat, and asked for guidance.
Then she sent Nolan a message.
Do not come to my door. If you have information, contact the investigators or my lawyer.
He replied immediately.
Celeste told me you're trying to have me arrested.
Naomi felt a surge of anger.
She typed carefully.
You need to speak to your own lawyer. Do not contact me again.
Nolan remained outside for several minutes.
Then he drove away.
Naomi photographed the vehicle from inside the house and preserved the messages.
Later that afternoon, she received confirmation that Nolan had retained counsel.
His attorney had contacted investigators.
Naomi felt both relief and dread.
Someone was finally willing to explain what had happened.
But the explanation might be worse than anything she imagined.
Over the following days, investigators obtained records and interviewed witnesses.
Nolan's attorney did not provide Naomi with privileged discussions.
But through the normal investigative and civil processes, important facts began to emerge.
SafeTable Solutions had been established in 2024.
Nolan controlled the company.
Its advertised services included allergen-management training, food-safety consulting, and specialized catering coordination.
Some legitimate services had been performed.
Staff had attended brief training sessions.
A few pieces of equipment had been purchased.
But multiple invoices appeared to charge for work that could not be substantiated.
The supposed $48,600 kitchen upgrade included equipment that investigators could not locate at Willowmere.
The training certificates were not independent certifications.
And the company's records showed that several allergy-safe service fees had been collected without corresponding orders from the specialist suppliers named in customer contracts.
Naomi read Rachel's summary in silence.
The amounts were larger than she had expected.
The pattern was also more deliberate.
It wasn't one mislabeled cupcake.
It was a business practice built around promises customers could not easily verify.
A week later, Naomi learned that Nolan had given investigators a detailed account of the birthday preparations.
According to the account summarized in the disclosed materials, Celeste had ordered the cancellation of Meadow & Mill's delivery.
Nolan had arranged the replacement desserts.
He had printed the labels.
And Celeste had approved their use.
Naomi reread those sentences until the words blurred.
The central question remained.
Had Celeste understood the exact danger to Ava?
Nolan's account addressed that too.
He described a conversation shortly before the party.
Celeste had asked whether Ava's dessert was being kept separate.
Nolan told her the original peanut-free order had been canceled and that the replacement products could not be confirmed safe for Ava.
According to Nolan, Celeste responded:
Then keep her away from the display. I'll handle Naomi.
Naomi placed the document on the table.
Her hands were shaking.
The words matched the message Lila had seen.
They matched Celeste's behavior.
They matched the sickening moment when Ava reached toward a cupcake and her aunt stopped her.
Celeste had understood that the table was not safe for Ava.
Yet she had let the party continue.
And she had allowed the other guests to eat.
Naomi looked toward the living room.
Ava was drawing a picture of a house.
She had colored the roof pink.
Naomi approached.
"What's that, sweetheart?"
"House."
"Whose house?"
Ava pointed to herself.
"Ava."
Naomi smiled.
"Ava's house?"
Ava nodded.
She added a yellow sun.
Then she drew a small blue figure beside the door.
"Mommy."
Naomi sat beside her.
"Can I live there too?"
Ava laughed.
"Yes!"
Naomi touched the edge of the picture.
For a moment, she wondered whether the best thing she could do was abandon Willowmere entirely.
Let Celeste keep it.
Let the developers buy it.
Walk away.
She had already lost so much peace trying to uncover the truth.
Then Ava added another figure.
A purple one.
"Grandma."
Naomi's heart softened.
Vivian still owned a house she had been pressured to surrender.
Former customers still deserved to know what they had been served.
And the workers who had been instructed to stay silent deserved the chance to speak.
Walking away might protect Naomi from further conflict.
But it would also leave other people carrying the consequences.
She kissed Ava's head.
"That's a beautiful house."
Ava tapped the blue figure.
"Mommy happy."
Naomi looked at her.
"I'm working on it, sweetheart."
That evening, Rachel called again.
"Naomi, there's a development."
"What happened?"
"Beacon Strand has announced that it's suspending its proposed acquisition pending review of the due-diligence issues."
Naomi closed her eyes.
The deal was beginning to collapse.
Rachel continued.
"But don't assume Celeste will simply walk away."
"Why?"
"Because she's just filed a counterclaim."
Naomi went still.
"Against whom?"
"Vivian."
"For what?"
"She alleges your mother breached the option agreement and interfered with the sale."
Naomi stared at the phone.
Rachel paused.
"There's more."
"What?"
"Celeste is also alleging that you intentionally damaged Willowmere's business through false public accusations."
Naomi felt the room tilt.
"She's suing me?"
"She's asserting claims. We'll respond through the legal process."
Naomi looked down at Ava's drawing.
A pink house.
A yellow sun.
Three small figures.
Then she looked toward the kitchen, where the birthday invitation still lay inside her evidence binder.
Every guest belongs at the table.
Naomi closed her eyes.
May you like
Her sister had denied Ava a cupcake.
Now she was trying to punish Naomi for asking why.
