Chapter 13 - The Office Above the BallroomThe police did not raid Willowmere House.

No dramatic arrest followed Naomi's complaint.
Instead, the investigation moved through interviews, records, and painstaking questions.
The local health department began reviewing the food-service incident. Staff requested menus, ingredient information, supplier records, and details of the venue's allergen procedures.
The venue's food-service operation was temporarily suspended pending corrective action and further review.
That suspension did not automatically close the entire property, but it prevented normal catered events from proceeding.
Several customers canceled bookings.
Celeste blamed Naomi publicly.
In a statement posted on Willowmere's business page, she described the party incident as an isolated labeling error that had been amplified by family disagreements.
She did not mention the canceled peanut-free catering order.
She did not mention the unused warning cards.
She did not mention the instructions Lila had received.
Naomi responded only through Rachel.
Their priority was preserving evidence, not fighting on social media.
On October 18, Rachel received confirmation that Willowmere had been formally instructed to preserve relevant electronic records.
The event-office security footage was among the requested materials.
Celeste initially claimed one of the cameras had malfunctioned.
Then Lila remembered something important.
Willowmere's cameras were maintained by an outside security contractor.
The contractor kept cloud backups for thirty days under the service plan.
Rachel moved quickly to ensure the relevant footage was identified and preserved through the proper legal channels.
Days later, Naomi watched an authorized copy of the footage with Rachel and an investigator.
The video was silent.
Its timestamp began at 9:42 a.m. on Ava's birthday.
The event office sat above the ballroom, behind a glass-paneled door.
Nolan entered carrying a laptop.
At 9:51, Celeste appeared.
At 9:57, a silver-haired man joined them.
Naomi recognized him immediately.
Graham Whitcomb.
Senior acquisitions director for Beacon Strand Development.
The man in Vivian's photograph.
The meeting lasted twenty-six minutes.
At one point, Whitcomb spread architectural drawings across the desk.
Celeste pointed toward a section of the plan.
The investigator paused the video.
"Can you identify the drawings?"
Naomi leaned forward.
"They look like site plans."
Rachel cautioned, "We'd need the actual documents to know what they depict."
The video resumed.
At 10:23, Whitcomb left.
Celeste followed him toward the hallway.
Nolan remained behind.
He opened a drawer.
Removed a stack of white cards.
And began placing them beside a printer.
The camera angle did not show the printed text clearly.
But the timing mattered.
At 10:31, Nolan carried the cards downstairs.
At 10:36, he returned with a small black folder.
Celeste entered moments later.
She opened the folder and looked at its contents.
Then she handed Nolan a folded sheet of paper.
Naomi leaned forward.
"That's the paper she took from behind the dessert table."
Rachel studied the screen.
"Maybe. We can't confirm that from the image alone."
Naomi nodded.
The investigator advanced the footage to 11:47.
Celeste stood in the office with Whitcomb again.
Naomi stared.
"He came back."
Apparently, he had.
The footage showed Whitcomb checking his watch while Celeste spoke rapidly.
Then Nolan appeared in the doorway.
He said something.
Celeste's expression changed.
At 11:49, she hurried downstairs.
Eleven minutes later, Ava's party began.
The investigator paused the video.
"That's the last office interaction before the incident."
Naomi looked at the screen.
"Can we see the service entrance?"
The investigator selected another file.
At 11:50, Nolan entered the rear hallway carrying a small stack of cards.
He passed the kitchen doors.
Then he stepped into the ballroom through the staff entrance.
Moments later, Lila appeared and helped arrange the display.
The footage did not show the surface of the table clearly enough to identify every card.
But it corroborated part of Lila's account.
Then the investigator played the footage from 12:12 p.m.
The chef rushed through the kitchen doors.
Staff scattered.
Nolan appeared near the rear entrance.
He checked his phone.
Then he disappeared into the storage room.
At 12:19, he emerged carrying a box.
At 12:23, he returned for another.
The investigator stopped the recording.
"That's consistent with the timeline you provided."
Naomi felt a grim satisfaction.
For days, she had wondered whether she was imagining patterns.
Now the chronology was visible.
But the most disturbing moment came after the party had already collapsed.
At 12:28, Celeste entered the office.
She opened the black folder.
Removed several papers.
Then placed them inside her handbag.
Naomi recognized the same deliberate movement she had seen beside the dessert display.
"Can you tell what they are?"
The investigator shook his head.
"Not from this angle."
Rachel leaned forward.
"Look at the bottom corner."
The investigator enlarged the image within the limits of the recording.
A company logo was visible.
SafeTable Solutions.
Naomi stared.
The documents Celeste had removed might have been invoices.
They might have been contracts.
Or they might have contained something much more damaging.
The investigator moved to the next clip.
At 12:34, Celeste called someone.
She paced.
Then she pressed one hand against her forehead.
A minute later, Nolan appeared in the office.
She handed him a set of keys.
He left immediately.
Naomi thought of the black SUV.
The boxes.
The document bag.
She turned toward Rachel.
"She told him to remove the records."
Rachel's expression remained careful.
"The timing raises that possibility. We still need evidence of what she instructed him to do."
Naomi nodded, frustrated.
Then the investigator opened a final file.
It had been recovered from a second camera covering the parking area.
The video showed Nolan loading the SUV.
But someone else was standing beside him.
May you like
Graham Whitcomb.
And as Nolan closed the trunk, the developer handed him a white envelope.
