Chapter 19 - The Price of Betraying YourselfThe old greenhouse stood behind the western gardens.

It had once been Eleanor Vale's favorite place.

In winter, she grew herbs and pale roses beneath its glass roof.

In summer, she taught Sophia to care for seedlings and transplant young plants without damaging their roots.

After Eleanor died, Celeste replaced the gardener and stopped maintaining the greenhouse.

By 2024, ivy covered one wall, and several glass panels were cracked.

Adrian brought Sophia there with Evelyn and Marcus.

Dana had advised them to document what they found and handle potential evidence carefully.

They photographed the entrance and the cellar before moving anything.

The air smelled of damp earth.

Sophia walked slowly.

At the rear of the greenhouse was a wooden hatch.

Adrian lifted it.

A narrow staircase descended into the old potting cellar.

He switched on a flashlight.

Sophia remained at the top until Evelyn asked whether she wanted to continue.

She nodded.

They descended carefully.

At the bottom, shelves held rusted gardening tools, broken pots, and forgotten bags of soil.

Sophia pointed toward a wooden workbench.

Adrian moved aside a box of empty planters.

Beneath the bench was a narrow metal panel.

He removed it.

Inside lay a waterproof pouch.

Sophia had wrapped it in several layers of plastic.

Adrian opened the outer wrapping.

A rose-gold smartphone rested inside.

The screen was dark.

Marcus examined it without switching it on.

"Don't try random passcodes," he warned. "We should preserve its condition and have a qualified examiner handle it."

Sophia nodded.

She wrote:

PHOTOS IN HIDDEN ALBUM.

Dana arranged for a digital forensic specialist to examine the device with Sophia's consent.

The phone was stored securely and documented.

For the first time, Adrian felt they might recover evidence that had survived precisely because Sophia had been underestimated.

That evening, Celeste requested a private meeting with Sophia.

Dana advised against an unstructured confrontation, but Sophia surprised everyone.

She wanted to hear what Celeste had to say.

The meeting took place in the library with Dana present.

Celeste arrived wearing a pale-blue dress.

Her face appeared tired.

When she saw Sophia sitting upright with her notebook, something flickered in her expression.

Regret, perhaps.

Or resentment that the frightened girl was no longer behaving as expected.

"Hello, sweetheart," Celeste said.

Sophia did not respond.

Celeste sat opposite her.

"I know things have become painful."

Sophia wrote:

YES.

Celeste glanced at Dana.

"I was hoping we could speak as family."

Dana replied evenly, "Sophia asked me to remain."

Celeste pressed her lips together.

"Of course."

She turned back.

"There have been misunderstandings. Your father left a very complicated situation. I was trying to protect the company and everyone depending on it."

Sophia wrote:

YOU SAID I WAS CONFUSED.

Celeste sighed.

"I was worried about you."

YOU TOOK MY PHONE.

Celeste went still.

"That was because you were becoming obsessive about the documents."

Sophia looked directly at her.

YOU TOLD ADRIAN I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND.

"I followed medical advice."

YOU TOLD THE DOCTOR WHAT TO WRITE.

Celeste's expression hardened.

"That's not true."

Dana watched silently.

Sophia began writing another sentence.

Her hand shook.

She stopped, breathed, and tried again.

WHY DID YOU WANT ME GONE?

For a moment, Celeste looked genuinely wounded.

"Because I couldn't bear watching you destroy yourself with this fixation."

Sophia shook her head.

Celeste leaned forward.

"You don't understand what was happening. We were facing enormous financial pressure. Hundreds of jobs were at stake. Your father made decisions he shouldn't have made, and I was left trying to save his company."

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

She wrote:

THEN WHY DID YOU HURT ME?

Celeste looked away.

No answer came.

The silence lasted long enough to become unbearable.

Finally, Celeste opened her handbag.

She removed a folder.

"There may be a way to resolve everything without more damage."

Dana sat straighter.

"What is that?"

"A settlement proposal."

Inside was an offer to establish a $5 million fund for Sophia's benefit, with independent professional management and various payments to resolve potential claims.

In exchange, the agreement included broad releases and cooperation provisions concerning the proposed Riverside transaction.

Dana read the terms carefully.

Then looked at Celeste.

"These provisions would require extensive negotiation and conflict review. Sophia cannot be asked to surrender claims or governance rights without fully understanding the consequences."

Celeste's voice sharpened.

"It's an extraordinary amount of money."

Sophia opened her notebook.

She wrote one sentence.

IT WAS ALWAYS MY MONEY.

Celeste stared.

Sophia turned the page.

AND THE HOMES ARE NOT YOURS TO TRADE.

The room fell silent.

Celeste's face changed.

For the first time, she stopped pretending the conversation was about Sophia's welfare.

"You think you're morally superior because you read a few documents?"

Sophia lowered her pencil.

Celeste continued.

"Your father built this empire. I kept it from collapsing after he died. Adrian walked away from the responsibility, and you were too young to understand what it cost."

Dana interjected.

"Mrs. Vale, we should end this meeting."

But Celeste was looking only at Sophia.

"Everything you have came from people who made difficult choices."

Sophia picked up her pencil again.

YOU MADE ME PAY FOR YOURS.

Celeste went silent.

Then she stood.

"You'll regret turning your family into enemies."

Sophia did not look away.

Dana rose.

"This meeting is over."

Celeste left without another word.

Later that night, the digital forensic specialist called Dana.

The recovered phone was accessible.

A substantial collection of photographs remained intact, including images that appeared to show accounting records and correspondence.

Metadata would need analysis, and document authenticity would require corroboration.

But one image immediately stood out.

It showed a signed instruction authorizing a transfer from Riverside-related funds to Northbridge.

The instruction was dated May 18, 2023.

One day before Sophia's breakdown.

The recipient information appeared to connect the payment to a holding company controlled by Mark Duvall through a layered ownership structure.

Dana stared at the image.

Then opened a second.

This one showed a handwritten note in Celeste's unmistakable script.

Sophia has seen the reconciliation. Mark says we can still get the approvals through if we keep her away from the records.

Dana read it twice.

The investigation had just crossed a line.

They no longer had only a young woman's recollections.

May you like

They had contemporaneous documents that appeared to connect the financial transaction to efforts to exclude her.

And the threatened closing was now only days away.
