Chapter 12 - The Day They Tried to Take Her AwayCedar Pines sent a black luxury medical transport vehicle at 9:15 on a Thursday morning.

Adrian had already told the facility he disputed the transfer.

He had provided written notice through Dana Shaw that Sophia opposed admission and that the authorization bearing his signature was allegedly forged.

The facility's admissions director had said the matter would be reviewed.

Apparently, someone had decided to proceed anyway.

The vehicle stopped outside Hawthorne House.

Two attendants stepped out.

They were polite, professionally dressed, and carrying paperwork.

Neither had met Sophia.

Celeste greeted them in the foyer.

"Thank you for coming."

Then Adrian appeared at the top of the staircase.

"No one is taking my sister anywhere."

Celeste looked up.

"Adrian, please."

He descended the stairs.

"I spoke with Cedar Pines yesterday."

"Then you know their team is expecting her."

"I also told them the authorization is disputed."

Celeste's expression cooled.

"You're being irrational."

One attendant glanced between them.

"Sir, we're not law enforcement. If there's a dispute over consent or authority, we need to resolve it before any transport."

Adrian looked at him.

"Then you aren't transporting her."

The man nodded.

"We'll contact our admissions department."

Celeste stepped closer.

"She requires care."

"Then we'll arrange appropriate care with her participation."

"She cannot meaningfully consent."

A soft sound came from the staircase.

Everyone looked up.

Sophia stood beside Evelyn.

She wore pale-pink pajamas and a cream cardigan.

Her hair was pulled into its familiar messy bun.

She held a notebook against her chest.

Evelyn stayed beside her without touching her.

Sophia slowly descended, holding the banister.

Each step was deliberate.

When she reached the foyer, she opened the notebook.

On the first page, written in large block letters, were four words.

I DO NOT AGREE.

Celeste's face hardened.

"Darling, this is not a decision you understand."

Sophia turned the page.

I WANT MY LAWYER.

The admissions attendant looked at Celeste.

"Ma'am, we won't proceed under these circumstances."

Celeste stared at the notebook.

"You've been coached."

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

But she did not lower the paper.

Adrian stepped closer.

"No one coached her."

Celeste looked at Evelyn.

"This is your doing."

Evelyn met her gaze.

"She made her wishes clear."

"You're dismissed."

The words rang through the foyer.

Evelyn blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"Your employment is terminated. Leave my house."

Adrian immediately said, "She stays until Sophia's care arrangements are settled."

Celeste turned on him.

"You do not employ the staff."

"No," he replied. "But you don't get to silence my sister by firing the person who listens to her."

Evelyn looked at Sophia.

Sophia was trembling.

Then, slowly, she wrote two words.

PLEASE STAY.

Evelyn felt tears sting her eyes.

"I want to," she whispered.

Celeste gave a bitter laugh.

"How touching."

She turned toward the attendants.

"This family is experiencing a difficult situation. I'll call your director."

The attendants withdrew to their vehicle.

Adrian asked the household manager to ensure no one interfered with Sophia's access to her lawyer.

Then he called Dana.

Within an hour, Dana had initiated an emergency application for protective relief in the guardianship proceeding, supported by Sophia's written objections and the disputed transfer paperwork.

She also requested prompt consideration of independent counsel and evaluation arrangements.

The judge's chambers scheduled an emergency appearance.

The vehicle left without Sophia.

Evelyn packed her belongings that afternoon.

She had no intention of remaining in Celeste's employ.

Adrian offered to pay her privately as Sophia's companion while the legal arrangements were clarified.

Evelyn refused to agree until Sophia had been asked.

Sophia wrote:

I WANT EVELYN HERE.

Dana documented the preference.

For the time being, Evelyn would remain as an invited support person, with her role and compensation handled separately from Celeste's household staff.

It was a small distinction.

But it mattered.

Sophia was not an object being passed between caretakers.

She was a person choosing who could help her.

That evening, Evelyn went to the garden to call her mother.

Rose answered on the second ring.

"Well?"

"They tried to transfer her today."

Rose inhaled sharply.

"Did they?"

"No."

"Good."

"Celeste fired me."

"Better."

Evelyn laughed despite herself.

"Mom."

"Now you can stop pretending you went there to polish silver."

Evelyn looked through the windows toward Sophia's bedroom.

"Someone threatened you."

"I know."

"Are you frightened?"

Rose was quiet for a moment.

"Yes."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Then why are you helping?"

"Because I was frightened in 2019, and I did nothing. I let that woman ruin my name because I thought keeping quiet would protect you."

"Mom—"

"It didn't protect anyone."

Her voice trembled.

"I won't make the same mistake twice."

When Evelyn returned inside, Adrian was waiting with the forensic specialist's preliminary report on the USB drive.

The drive contained encrypted archives, old accounting spreadsheets, and scanned correspondence.

Some files could not yet be opened.

But one folder had been successfully recovered.

It was labeled:

RIVERSIDE — ORIGINAL APPROVALS.

Inside was a scanned document dated December 2021.

A letter authorizing a temporary transfer of money between company accounts.

It bore Victor Vale's signature.

And a handwritten note.

Mark assures me these amounts will be returned before the annual review. Eleanor would never have approved this, but we cannot let the project fail.

Adrian read it twice.

His father had known about the earlier transfers.

Perhaps he had intended to repay them.

Perhaps he had been deceived.

But he had helped create the weakness that Celeste and Mark later exploited.

At the bottom of the document was another notation.

If the repayment fails, the Riverside property may have to be sold.

Adrian looked toward Sophia's bedroom.

For the first time, he understood that the conspiracy was older than her breakdown.

And the people who had silenced her were trying to finish something his father had begun.
