Chapter 4 - Rachel's TrustJulia Hart refused to discuss the trust over the phone.

Daniel met her at nine the next morning.
Olivia came with him.
Julia was sixty-one, gray-haired, precise and almost impossible to rattle. She had represented Rachel's family long before Daniel married Rachel.
When Daniel entered her office, Julia closed the door.
“I heard about Nora.”
“She'll recover.”
Julia exhaled.
“Thank God.”
Daniel placed the trust letter on her desk.
“What transactions?”
Julia looked at Olivia, then back at him.
“Before we discuss them, I need you to understand the structure Rachel created.”
“I know the structure.”
“I don't think you do.”
The statement irritated him.
“I signed half of it.”
“You signed the marital documents. Rachel's father created the beneficiary trust.”
Daniel sat back.
Julia opened a thick file.
“When Rachel died, her minority ownership in Mercer Development and her interest in the Lakeview property transferred into trust for Nora.”
“I know.”
“Do you know what happens if Nora dies while you're still living?”
Daniel paused.
“The assets return to me?”
“Most of them flow into a separate parental inheritance trust for you.”
“And after that?”
“If you later die, your estate plan controls them.”
Daniel stared.
His current estate plan left most personal assets to Nora.
But if Nora predeceased him?
Vanessa, as his wife, would inherit a substantial share.
Julia continued.
“Rachel knew you might remarry. That's why she asked me to review your estate plan regularly.”
Daniel's chest tightened.
“What transactions did you find?”
Julia slid three pages across the desk.
Over six months, Mercer Family Holdings had paid $3.2 million in consulting fees to a company called Westbridge Advisory.
Daniel frowned.
“I've never heard of them.”
“Neither had we.”
“Who approved the payments?”
“Your digital signature.”
Daniel looked up.
“I didn't.”
Julia nodded.
“We suspected that.”
Olivia leaned forward.
“Where did the money go?”
“Westbridge has an account in Delaware. We traced part of it to a Nevada entity. After that, we need forensic accountants.”
Daniel thought of his chief financial officer.
“Marcus.”
Julia did not react.
“Marcus Reed authenticated two of the payments.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Marcus had been his closest friend since graduate school.
CFO of Mercer Development for seven years.
Best man at his wedding to Rachel.
One of the first people to tell Daniel he deserved happiness again when he began dating Vanessa.
“Does Vanessa know any of this?” Olivia asked.
Julia hesitated.
“I don't know.”
Daniel remembered the meeting notice.
“Could she access these trust records?”
“Not directly.”
“Could she learn what happens if Nora dies?”
“Your estate binder contains a summary.”
Daniel pictured the blue binder in his study.
Vanessa had organized that study twice.
He stood.
Julia stopped him.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
“There is something else.”
She removed a copy of an email.
It had been sent from Daniel's personal address two months earlier.
Please provide a detailed schedule of assets that would revert to me upon Nora Mercer's death.
Daniel stared.
“I didn't send that.”
“I suspected you hadn't.”
Olivia's voice dropped.
“Who had access?”
Daniel thought of the home computer.
Vanessa.
His passwords.
The shared tablet.
The night she had asked whether Rachel's trust would ever “expire.”
He had laughed.
He had said Nora would control it when she was older.
Vanessa had smiled.
He had thought she was curious.
Julia said, “Someone wanted to know exactly what would happen financially if your daughter died.”
Daniel could no longer hear the air-conditioning.
He saw Nora in the pool.
Vanessa leaning over her.
Rest in peace.
Then the missing ladder.
Then the email.
“What would Vanessa receive if Nora died and then something happened to me?”
Julia's answer came slowly.
“Under your current will?”
“Yes.”
“Your residence. Most liquid personal assets. A marital trust. And depending on how the reverted shares were classified…”
“How much?”
“Potentially control of everything.”
Daniel looked at Olivia.
Neither of them spoke.
Julia closed the file.
“This is no longer an estate-planning question.”
Daniel's phone vibrated.
Detective Harris.
He answered.
“Mr. Mercer, we processed the ladder.”
Daniel's hand tightened.
“And?”
“We found fingerprints.”
“Vanessa's?”
“Yes.”
Daniel shut his eyes.
Harris continued.
“But that's not the part I called about.”
May you like
Daniel opened them again.
“We also found blood.”
