Chapter 11 - The Asset Nobody MentionedRuth read Daniel’s message twice.

Then sat.

Claire watched her.

“What did Dad give you?”

Ruth did not answer immediately.

“Ruth.”

“A contract.”

“What contract?”

“An option.”

Claire stared.

“To buy what?”

“Harbor 17.”

The room went silent.

Claire almost laughed.

“The property Daniel owns?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Robert suspected the sale to Daniel could later be challenged.”

“So he created another secret deal.”

“He arranged an option agreement giving a Mercer-affiliated development entity the right to purchase Harbor 17 under certain conditions.”

“What conditions?”

“If Daniel used the property as collateral for undisclosed borrowing tied to Donovan Development.”

Claire thought of the eight-million-dollar loan.

“He did.”

“Yes.”

“Does the option still exist?”

“I believed it expired.”

“Believed?”

Ruth called counsel.

Two hours later, they had the answer.

The option had been extended automatically because one environmental permit remained unresolved.

Harbor 17 could potentially be acquired for a formula price far below its current twenty-six-million-dollar valuation.

Claire stared at Ruth.

“You could take it.”

“Possibly.”

“Would you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because that would look exactly like what Patricia believes.”

Claire understood.

Ruth could profit enormously from Donovan’s crisis.

Even if she had not created it.

“Daniel knows.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why he messaged me.”

“He wants you to think I engineered all of this.”

“Did you?”

Ruth’s eyes hardened.

“No.”

Claire believed her.

Mostly.

That bothered her.

“Who knew about the option?”

“Robert. My attorney. Me.”

“Not Ethan?”

“No.”

“Nathan?”

“No.”

“Patricia?”

“I doubt it.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Her father had built safeguards on safeguards.

Trust shares.

Marriage trigger.

Red ledger.

Ruth’s letter.

Harbor option.

Every protection required another secret.

He had constructed a maze and called it safety.

Nathan joined them later.

His legal analysis was cautious.

“If Mercer exercised the option now, it would create litigation for years.”

“We’re not exercising it,” Ruth said.

Nathan looked surprised.

“It could secure a valuable property.”

Ruth’s voice sharpened.

“We are not profiting from Claire’s family fraud.”

Claire noticed Nathan’s reaction.

Respect.

He nodded.

Then another possibility emerged.

The Harbor property could be sold voluntarily at market value.

Daniel’s private lender would be repaid.

Remaining equity could potentially restore money to Donovan Development if Claire proved the original transaction involved self-dealing.

Twenty-six million.

Enough to stabilize the company.

Enough to avoid the Mercer merger entirely.

Claire felt something close to hope.

Then Nathan destroyed it.

“Daniel has to agree.”

“He won’t.”

“Or a court has to unwind the original sale.”

“How long?”

“Months. Possibly years.”

The lender review was tomorrow.

Claire stared at the table.

“We don’t have years.”

Ethan arrived that afternoon.

He had spent the day with Mercer’s board.

Claire almost told him to leave.

Instead she listened.

“Mercer is withdrawing the merger offer.”

Patricia would panic.

Daniel might celebrate.

Claire asked:

“Why?”

“Because I recommended it.”

She looked at him.

“That harms Mercer?”

“It removes an attractive acquisition.”

“Then why?”

“Because you cannot determine what Donovan is worth while the books are unreliable.”

Reasonable.

Also ethical.

Claire hated that she still wanted to trust him.

Ethan continued.

“I’m taking a leave from my corporate role.”

“What?”

“The internal review found I should have disclosed the merger conflict earlier.”

“To whom?”

“To you. To our board.”

Claire stared.

“Ruth made you?”

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“She tried to talk me out of stepping away.”

Ruth said from across the room:

“I did.”

Claire looked between them.

Ethan continued.

“I made a choice because I wanted our wedding more than I wanted an uncomfortable conversation.”

He swallowed.

“That is on me.”

Claire looked at his bare left hand.

He had removed his wedding ring too.

Not discarded.

Placed on a chain around his neck.

She looked away.

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because I don’t want you hearing it from a newspaper.”

Evidence first.

Apologies later.

He remembered.

Claire nodded once.

Then Nathan’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

“What?”

Nathan looked at Claire.

“Daniel’s attorney called.”

“Daniel has an attorney?”

“Yes.”

“What does he want?”

Nathan exhaled.

“A deal.”

Claire stared.

“What kind?”

“He returns records and signs Harbor 17 back to a neutral trust.”

“And?”

Nathan’s voice lowered.

“He wants immunity from Donovan Development.”

Claire laughed.

“We can’t give criminal immunity.”

“No.”

“He knows that.”

“Yes.”

“So what does he really want?”

Nathan looked at Ruth.

May you like

Then Claire.

“He wants Robert Donovan’s 2009 confession released publicly before he surrenders.”
