Chapter 24 - The Room Without Rope

One year after the incident, Ms. Flores invited Amara and Sophia into Room 214 after school.
“We’re filming a student safety orientation next week.”
Amara stiffened.
“Filming?”
“Only volunteers.”
Sophia immediately looked at Amara.
Ms. Flores noticed.
“You do not have to participate.”
Amara asked:
“What’s it about?”
“Reporting concerns. Consent. Fund transparency.”
Sophia smiled slightly.
“That’s extremely on the nose.”
Ms. Flores laughed.
“Yes.”
The video would include students explaining:
How to report staff misconduct.
How school funds were tracked.
Why students could refuse non-emergency searches by peers.
How to ask for a counselor.
Where to find independent reporting links.
Amara thought about it.
“I want to do the money part.”
Sophia stared.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m good at spreadsheets now.”
That was true.
She had become obsessed with understanding invoices after the case.
Not from fear.
From curiosity.
She even considered accounting as a future career.
Denise found that darkly funny.
Calvin’s fraud accidentally created an honest accountant.
Ms. Flores asked:
“Can Sophia film your section?”
Amara looked at Sophia.
A year earlier Sophia’s hands moved Amara’s sleeves under an adult’s command.
Now Sophia held a camera.
Waiting.
Not assuming.
Amara smiled.
“Yes.”
Then added:
“But I approve the clip before anyone posts it.”
Ms. Flores nodded.
“Absolutely.”
Control returned in ordinary procedures.
Permission.
Review.
Choice.
That evening Amara opened a box containing evidence copies.
The fake theft accusation.
Photographs of the rope.
A still frame from Patricia’s video.
She closed it.
Not destroyed.
Not worshiped.
Stored.
History.
Tomorrow she would stand in the same room.
May you like
In front of another camera.
This time because she wanted to.
