Chapter 23 - The Money Returned

Restitution took time.

The seized rental house sold.

Bank accounts liquidated.

Insurance litigation settled part of the school’s losses.

Families received reimbursements.

The Washington trip fund was restored through district reserves and recovered assets.

The next eighth-grade class went to Washington.

Amara’s class had missed the original trip during the investigation.

The district offered a makeup trip.

Amara declined.

Sophia went.

That was fine.

Healing did not require recreating everything stolen.

Amara used part of her civil settlement for therapy and future education.

The amount remained confidential.

Reporters guessed.

They were wrong.

Denise refused interviews.

Money was not a scoreboard for pain.

Principal Rowe settled employment claims and formally surrendered his administrative credentials.

He moved into private-sector work unrelated to schools.

Some parents hated that he rebuilt his life.

Amara did not care.

“He can have a job.”

Sophia looked surprised.

“Really?”

“He just shouldn’t run a school.”

Consequences did not require permanent annihilation.

That was another difference between justice and revenge.

Patricia’s appeals focused on sentencing details.

Not innocence.

Her guilty plea remained.

The case slowly stopped producing headlines.
