Chapter 23 - What Kiara Chose to KeepBefore school orientation, Kiara cleaned her desk.

She found:
The first extra-class flyer.
$180 PER MONTH.
The anonymous locker note.
A copy of the district apology.
Her corrected transcript.
A still image from Ethan’s video that investigators had returned with the case file.
She stared at the image.
Mrs. Dalton’s hand in her hair.
Kiara bent near the trash.
For months, she hated it.
It froze her in the instant she had the least control.
She almost tore it.
Then stopped.
Renee stood at the door.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
“You sure?”
Kiara nodded.
Then she placed the image beside a photograph from art club.
In the second photograph, Kiara held up a painting.
Smiling.
Hair loose.
Hands covered in blue paint.
Two images.
Same girl.
Neither complete.
“Keeping both?” Renee asked.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Kiara shrugged.
“That happened.”
She touched the first.
“And this happened too.”
The second.
Renee nodded.
Kiara picked up the tutoring flyer.
That one she did tear.
Not because she wanted to erase evidence.
The district had copies.
Because this copy no longer had a job.
She dropped it into the recycling bin.
Renee smiled.
“Symbolic.”
“Don't ruin it.”
“Sorry.”
Kiara laughed.
Then she opened her orientation speech.
At the top:
You do not owe adults money, silence, gratitude, or obedience in exchange for being treated like a student.
She stared.
Too aggressive.
Delete.
Second attempt:
A good teacher can challenge you. A good teacher cannot sell you the right to be respected.
May you like
Better.
She continued.
