Chapter 20 - Back of Room 214The final student advisory meeting took place in Room 214.

Kiara almost refused.
Same room.
Same back wall.
Same fluorescent lights.
And still, near the rear door:
A large trash bin.
Different bin.
Same shape.
Kiara stopped outside.
Ethan noticed.
“You want another room?”
“Yes.”
Then she paused.
“No.”
“You sure?”
“No.”
They entered.
Principal Whitfield did not ask why Kiara chose a seat near the front.
The meeting focused on next-year policies.
Complaint tracking.
Tutoring rules.
Financial disclosure.
Student rights.
At the end, Ms. Warren lifted a box of old classroom materials.
“Could someone hold the door?”
Kiara stood.
Then froze.
The box needed to pass near the trash bin.
Her heartbeat changed.
Ethan noticed but stayed seated.
He did not rescue her automatically.
That mattered.
Kiara walked toward the back.
One step.
Then another.
The trash bin remained a trash bin.
Paper.
Wrappers.
Nothing else.
She held the door.
Ms. Warren carried the box out.
“Thanks.”
“You're welcome.”
That was it.
No confrontation.
No music.
No dramatic breakthrough.
Kiara looked at the bin.
Then returned to her seat.
Later, she told Renee.
“I went near it.”
Renee knew exactly what “it” meant.
“How was it?”
“Stupid.”
“Good stupid?”
Kiara thought.
“Normal stupid.”
Renee smiled.
That was better.
That evening, Kiara received an invitation.
JEFFERSON RIDGE INCOMING STUDENT ORIENTATION.
Student speaker nomination.
She laughed.
“No.”
Renee looked over.
“What?”
“They want me to speak.”
“You don't have to.”
“I know.”
That answer mattered.
Kiara placed the invitation on the refrigerator.
For two weeks she ignored it.
Then Brianna texted.
DO IT.
Ethan texted:
DO NOT LET ME WRITE THE SPEECH.
Kiara replied:
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
She accepted.
Her suggested topic:
What I Wish I Knew in Seventh Grade.
She wrote three drafts.
Deleted all three.
The fourth began:
The first thing I want you to know is that asking for help and owing someone are not the same thing.
May you like
She stared at it.
Then kept writing.
